With Ellen Burt, Daniel Doram, Jonty Jenner, Tara Norris, Delray Rawlins due to finish in the Academy and assuming that Joe Billings, Tom Gordon, Tom Haines, Nick Oxley, Nick Smith, Ben Twine and Harrison Ward are retained in the Academy my Academy squad for 2017 would be:
Boys
Joe Billings Keeper Tom Gordon Seamer Tom Haines Batsman Nick Oxley Spinner Nick Smith Seamer Ben Twine Seamer Harrison Ward Batsman
Girls
Flora Bertwistle Spinner Ella Bourne Seamer Ariana Dowse Keeper Ella McCaughan Batsman Hollie Young Seamer

Of those graduating from the academy, probably Rawlins has made the most progress. Maybe all three could be given academy plus contracts

It's hard to see that we can find any spaces in the squad at present, with at least two places earmarked for a couple of quality batsman. If Hatchett is forced to retire, I would imagine Sakande would get a contract. The options would be, if Sussex didn't want to lose them, either University, or try and get them on some sort of Academy Plus contract. We have just completed an encouraging season as far as the seconds go, so it would be good to make sure there is some sort of pathway open when players graduate

Can anyone explain why cream of young Sussex cricket performs so bad in Sussex Premier league. Very poor last season and have lost 6 out of 7 this. This was a Sussex idea but maybe they are out of depth and should play in a lower Div

I have watched them twice this year and they were terrible. The county should be ashamed that the best youngsters in county cant compete with the best club sides. It is not about lack of ability but poor attitude. This is down to Sussex. So many play for themselves and others think they are far better then they are. It wont happen but should be relagated to Div 1.

Looking back on games won over the last 6 years by the Academy/Development XI:
2010- won 4 games 2011-won 2 games 2012-won 1 game 2013-won 4 games 2014-won 3 games 2015-won 0 games 2016 won 1 game.
I don't think it's the winning that's important in these matches more the development of the players. The premier league is of a high enough standard of cricket to test the youngsters. Moving down a division wouldn't help to push them on and get them ready for the next step up which would be 2nd XI. Most of the academy boys play for premier league clubs anyway.

All part of you-know-who's "rich legacy", I'm sure. (Some seem to think that the "rich legacy" phrase was invented by a cynical poster on here. But it was genuinely used - several times - by a senior Sussex grandee to describe Mark 'Lucky' Davis's inheritance. Honest...)

Robbo deserted a sinking ship and left Davis to try to plug the holes when half the crew were injured. Luckily the new recruits have started to climb the ranks and steady the ship but it will be a while before the SS Sussex can rejoin the main flotilla.

IIRC, the phrase 'Robbo's Legacy' originated from the name of a celebratory pamphlet produced by an in-house grandee - limited edition, of course. Time is a great healer, but I still faintly recall the legacy being celebrated at a select dinner - 'by invitation only', which I can only assume meant that gate crashers were not welcome.

I do agree winning is not a priority. However to not be able to compete so often is not acceptable.
