IIRC, the phrase 'Robbo's Legacy' originated from the name of a celebratory pamphlet produced by an in-house grandee - limited edition, of course. Time is a great healer, but I still faintly recall the legacy being celebrated at a select dinner - 'by invitation only', which I can only assume meant that gate crashers were not welcome. JF? Yes - so much for me trying to keep it anonymous.

Hi all
I was lucky enough to watch and report on 5 of the Academy Matches this season. The squad, under the management of Jason Finch, may have won just one game they became a lot more competitive and stronger as the season wore on. Indeed they played out a rain affected t20 game at Brighton securing a tied result and then gave Champions Roffey a real scare in the penultimate game.
Its very valuable experience for our developing players and perhaps next season will see them win a lot more games.

There is an academy tour to South Africa in December, where we apparently plan to look at a few triallists Rumour has it that we are looking at a couple of young WI all rounders, and a Guernsey wicket keeper.

That sounds logical. The future will be larger squads to provide cover for all of these tournaments and there won't be any more overseas stars available all season - good, bad or indifferent. Instead squads will have to come from in-house development in or out of the county borders.

The keeper seems to be a Jason Martin 21, who played for the academy last season, at Durham, I believe. The academy tours to SA, usually comprise of a mixed age group. Think fellow channel islander, Jonty Jenner is also part of the group, so it will be interesting to see if he's awarded a Junior Pro contract

2017 Academy Squad
With Ellen Burt, Daniel Doram, Jonty Jenner, Tara Norris, Delray Rawlins due to finish in the Academy and assuming that Joe Billings, Tom Gordon, Tom Haines, Nick Oxley, Nick Smith, Ben Twine and Harrison Ward are retained in the Academy my Academy squad for 2017 would be:
Boys
Joe Billings Keeper Tom Gordon Seamer Tom Haines Batsman Nick Oxley Spinner Nick Smith Seamer Ben Twine Seamer Harrison Ward Batsman
Girls
Flora Bertwistle Spinner Ella Bourne Seamer Ariana Dowse Keeper Ella McCaughan Batsman Hollie Young Seamer
Under 17 Boys
There will be a minimum of eight changes to the Under 17 squad for 2017 with the following players who played in 2016 no longer eligible in 2017:
Ollie Bradley Seamer Joe Gilligan Wicket Keeper Tom Haines Batsman Nick Oxley Spinner Sam Rattle Spinner Harry Rollings Batsman Ben Twine Seamer Ross Whyte Seamer
There is also wicketkeeper-batsman Joe Billings who for some reason didn't even appear for the Under 17s in 2016 despite scoring a double hundred the year before.
Of the nine Tom Haines, Joe Billings, Nick Oxley and Ben Twine will be particularly missed. Oxley made the biggest improvement with the bat scoring 151 against Essex. The biggest disappointment of the season was undoubtedly Will Collard (8 wickets) who has fallen behind Scott Lenham (15 wickets) and Joe Pocklington (14 wickets) in the spin bowling pecking order for me. Nick Smith (22), Tom Gordon (20), Dominic Morgan (11) and Tom Clark (10) are likely to be the seamers.
Looking forward to 2017 I would select the following squad of 20:
Batsmen
Rory Betley Ollie Carter (new) Tom Clark Max Lincoln Alistair Orr Louis Storey (new) Harrison Ward (new) Josh Wood
Keeper
Mason Robinson (new)
Spinners
Will Collard Scott Lenham (new) Archit Patel Joe Pocklington (new) Harrison Tagg (new)
Seamers
Jack Carson (new) Tom Gordon Dominic Morgan (new) Joe Sarro (new) Nick Smith Joe Walker
My starting XII: Harrison Ward, Tom Clark, Ollie Carter, Tom Gordon, Louis Storey, Nick Smith (c), Alistair Orr, Scott Lenham, Max Lincoln, Dominic Morgan, Joe Pocklington, Mason Robinson (wk)
There is batting down to nine thanks to four of the top nine, and three of the top six, also bowling. Gordon, Orr, Clark, Lincoln, Storey, Carter, Lenham, Pocklington, Morgan and Robinson were part of the successful Sussex Under 15 team this season. If Ward, who didn't feature in 2016, doesn't appear in 2017 then I would replace him with Josh Wood and move the rest of the top seven up one place.
Under 17 Girls
With Bethany and Molly Beadle, Flora Bertwistle, Nancy Harman, Bethany Tagg and Lucy Western no longer eligible for the Under 17s next year there will be a very different squad next year.
Predicted Starting XI:
Ella McCaughan 4th captain Ariana Dowse wicketkeeper and 3rd captain Anna Willis Ella Wadey (VC) Polly McCarthy-Williams Emily Spooner Coco Streets Amie Anderson Hollie Young Ella Bourne (c) Eleanor Robinson
There are eight bowling options with Anderson, Bourne, McCaughan, Robinson, Spooner, Streets, Wadey and Young. Seven of the nine new players are in the starting eleven.
Backup players
Becky Landy Cassidy McCarthy Charley Hepburn Sophie Whittington Elise Jorgensen Ellie Botting Lottie Palmer-Brown

I think we might see a couple of additions to the academy, from slightly further afield

What is the point of having an Academy if you are just going to import players all the time? It is not as if we don't enough have talent within the county to come up with 12 Academy players for 2017 to rival anyone else on the county circuit. In any case the players that have been mentioned on here to date are too old for the Academy. An extended trial for the seconds would be a much more appropriate level in assessing whether they are good enough to play for Sussex. My Academy squad for 2017 would be Flora Bertwistle, Joe Billings, Ella Bourne, Ariana Dowse, Tom Gordon, Tom Haines, Ella McCaughan, Nick Oxley, Nick Smith, Ben Twine, Harrison Ward and Hollie Young.

Update 23rd April 2017: I would select the following squad of 20 for the Under 17s in 2017:
Batsmen
Ollie Carter (new) Tom Clark Max Lincoln Louis Storey (new) Harrison Ward (new)
Keepers
Rory Betley Alistair Orr Mason Robinson (new) Josh Wood
Spinners
Will Collard Scott Lenham (new) Archit Patel Joe Pocklington (new) Harrison Tagg (new)
Seamers
Jack Carson (new) Tom Gordon Dominic Morgan (new) Joe Sarro (new) Nick Smith Joe Walker
My starting XII: Harrison Ward, Tom Clark, Ollie Carter, Tom Gordon, Louis Storey, Nick Smith (c), Alistair Orr (wk), Scott Lenham, Max Lincoln, Will Collard, Dominic Morgan, Joe Pocklington
Reserves: Josh Wood (Bat/WK), Rory Betley (Bat/WK), Mason Robinson (Wk), Archit Patel (Spin), Harrison Tagg (Spin), Jack Carson (Seam), Joe Sarro (Seam), Joe Walker (Seam).
Betley, Collard, Patel, Smith, Walker, Ward and Wood will not be eligible for the Under 17s in 2018 and so there will be at least three changes to the starting XII with three from Carson, Robinson, Sarro and Tagg coming in.
