Why take Lees with an average of 44 when you have Northeast (90 and four centuries), Jennings (65 and five centuries), Madsen (60 and four centuries) and Hameed (57 and four centuries including 733 @ 92 in his last eight completed innings). We shouldn't be even looking at a batsman for the test team unless they have at least four hundreds to their name and are averaging at least 55 in the county championship. Of the current top five only Cook and Root deserve to be retained. Neither Finn nor Ball convince me and Wood is consistently injured. Rashid is out of form. MP Vaughan (Yor) 17 34 1 895 153 27.12 3 3 5 (1999, before playing for England in South Africa ) ME Trescothick (Eng,Sm) 12 19 2 738 105 43.41 1 5 11 (2000, picked v West Indies) DI Gower (Eng,Le,MCC) 21 31 2 1098 111 37.86 2 5 6 (1978, first season for England) There have been many players, now quite obscure, who have fulfilled your criteria and failed to make an impact in Test cricket. It ain't what you do, its the way that you do it: that's what gets results. That's only three exceptions in nearly forty years (none since 2000)!

I saw Duckett make a spectacular double century today and he seemed to be batting on a different pitch to every one of the other 21 players in the match. Total masterclass from a 21 year-old.
At lunchtime I saw invicta1977, who has had the pleasure of seeing the 19 year-old Haseeb Hameed, which I have not. He reckons Hameed is every bit as good as Duckett - may be better as his runs have come against the superior attacks in Div One.
Both should be on the tour.
At 19 and 21, they're the best young English batsmen since Root was that age and it's time to skip a generation. They deserve to leapfrog Hales (27), Ballance (26), Vince (25), Lyth (29), Robson (27) and Westley (27) in the Test squad.
In the white ball squads, I suspect England will be quite glad that it seems Morgan will refuse to tour Bangladesh. It will allow them to get Bairstow into the side without having to go through the unpleasantness of sacking a capain. Bairstow will surely cement his place (may be as keeper as well as a batsman, given how piss-poor Buttler's keeping was tonight)and there will be no way back for Morgan.

Jack Leach is Somerset's leading Championship bowler with over 50 division one wickets. He should be the third spinner to tour. I listened online last evening as he destroyed Warwickshire's top order on a spinning track. India will produce such pitches. Dawson and Ansari are batsman who bowl and will not rip through sides.

I am sure the selectors are not even discussing Leach but he is easily the best spinner that I have seen this season. He has just taken 6 wickets at Headingley to see off Yorkshire. Rashid on the other hand was far inferior and only looks dangerous against the tail and in one dayers.

Rashid on the other hand was far inferior and only looks dangerous against the tail and in one dayers. On form the second and third spinner should be Jack Leach (58 wickets @ 29) and Ollie Rayner (50 wickets @ 21). Adil Rashid has 32 wickets @ 34 and Liam Dawson has 15 wickets @ 47. I would drop Hales, Vince and Ballance. My revised seventeen man tour squad would be: Batsmen Cook Hameed 1,129 runs @ 51 with four hundreds Jennings 1,522 runs @ 69 with seven centuries Root Duckett 1,338 runs @ 61 with four centuries Northeast 1,103 runs @ 74 with four centuries Westley 1,209 runs @ 58 with three centuries Keepers Bairstow Foakes 739 runs @ 43 with 43 catches and 3 stumpings Spinners Ali Leach 58 wickets @ 29 BB 5-70 Rayner 50 wickets @ 21 BB 6-79 Seamers Anderson Broad Stokes Woakes Brooks 53 wickets @ 26 BB 5-53 My sixteen man squad for England Lions Batsmen: Nick Gubbins (Middlesex) 1,191 runs @ 57 HS 201* 3 100's, Alex Lees (Yorkshire) 1,145 runs @ 42 HS 132 3 100's, Rory Burns (Surrey) 1,135 runs @ 42 2 100's, Mark Stoneman (Durham or should that be Surrey) 1,069 runs @ 43 HS 141* 1 100, Joe Clarke (Worcestershire) 1,012 runs @ 42 HS 135 4 100's, Nick Browne (Essex) 980 runs @ 49 HS 255 2 100's, Scott Borthwick (Durham or should that be Surrey) 957 runs @ 40 HS 188* 3 100's. Keepers: Ben Cox (Worcestershire) 752 runs @ 38 HS 75 29ct/2st. Ben Brown (Sussex) 736 runs @ 43 HS 159* 2 100's. Spinners Mason Crane (Hampshire) 27 wickets @ 43 BB 3-19, Zafar Ansari (Surrey) 22 wickets @ 31 Seamers: Joe Leach (Worcestershire) 58 wickets @ 29 BB 5-70, Jamie Porter (Essex) 55 wickets @ 29 BB 5-46, Toby Roland-Jones (Middlesex) 44 wickets @ 31 BB 5-61, Jake Ball (Notts) 44 wickets @ 23 BB 5-66, Craig Overton (Somerset) 33 wickets @ 34 BB 4-54, Sam Curran (Surrey) 26 wickets @ 29 BB 6-51

Pleased to see Duckett, Foakes, Hameed, Jennings and Leach being mentioned but what have Dawson and Rashid done to get selected? Leach and Rayner have been far superior.

Nick Hoult says www.telegraph.co.uk/cricket/2016/09/15/gareth-batty-makes-shock-return-to-england-test-squad-for-tour-o/England Test squad for Bangladesh: Cook (capt), Hameed, Root, Ballance, Moeen, Stokes, Bairstow, Woakes, Rashid, Broad, Anderson, Buttler, Finn, Wood, Batty and Ansari, with Duckett as a 17th player. One-day squad for Bangladesh: Roy, Duckett, Root, Billings, Buttler (capt), Stokes, Moeen, Woakes, Willey, Rashid, Wood, Bairstow, Dawson, Jordan and Plunkett. The reasoning about Duckett rather escapes me: either he is in the Test side or he isn't. If he is it must be as a third opener with Cook and Hameed, and then there seem to be too many middle order and bits and pieces players. Rashid, Moeen and Ansari seem to be too many vieing for a spinning place before you get to Batty. Hoult has a great reputation for being the conduit for ECB news, but this doesn't feel right.

Jennings, Northeast, Westley, Foakes, Leach, Rayner and Brooks should have been selected instead.

Sadly, no surprise there, Joe. Quite surprised Jordan is not in the ODI squad. First his central contract was downgraded to an incremental one. Now I'd guess he's going to lose that, too, when the contracts are announced next month. As a bowling all-rounder he has become surplus to requirements as there are four England seamers who are quality white ball batsmen, all of whom are now ahead of him - Stokes, Woakes,Willey and Plunkett. If his days as an England player are over, it's good news for Sussex on the field. Off-the-field the treasurer in the Sussex counting-house may take a different view...
