Interesting to see so many surprised and indignant comments about the defeat by Kent. As soon as the team selection was announced, and the reasons given for it, it was clear that this group of youngsters and under-achievers was going to lose, and probably lose badly against a side that was genuinely pressing for promotion and had expressly made two new short-term signings to try and achieve it. Perhaps some were caught up in the hype of winning two consecutive games, but it was never likely, or justified by the form displayed throughout the season that Sussex would finish anywhere in the top three. Now we can come back down to earth and play against another middle of the table side, one that has done rather better this year than predicted by most, and one that has made astute signings, whatever George Dobell may think.
The problem for Sussex is how to pick up again and make the last three games meaningful. Joyce will be back for this game and the next, though I think he will miss the final game through going to South Africa with Ireland for a one-day intenrtantional, and we might as well get every bit of value out of him, and fill at least one of the places given to neophytes, probably Haines who could do more harm to his career by playing in this dispirited team than by training and practising for next year. We are back in cat and mouse land with Wright and his injury - is it a tear, or is it just a strain? Wait and see after a scan and rest - and may have to do without him. Mark Davis in his interview after the game spoke of contracts still to be awarded and that means that Salt has to play now, as well as Hudson-Prentice. There is little point in continuing with Cachopa, for whatever reason he is no longer capable of playing to the standards of his arrival here in 2014, and he joins Shahzad as someone with a contract for next year but no obvious place in the side. Nash and Wells, Wiese and Brown all have to work on their own confidence to support the younger players.
As there haven't been any announcements about Archer's return from Barbados I assume he will miss this game, and we need to get one at least of Garton and Whittingham fit enough to bowl, Garton for preference. Leaving aside any comparisons amongst the younger bowlers, Robinson bowled well at times and should be assured of his place over Shahzad. Briggs will obviously play and get through a lot of overs but I would like to see Wells given some longer and more imaginative spells, remembering that in the Hove game against Leics he took 2-67 in 24 overs and Briggs went wicketless for 89 in 22.
Nash Joyce Wells Salt Hudson-Prentice Brown Wiese Robinson Briggs Garton Magoffin

Very good preview.
I think the surprise and indignation at the result of the last match was not the defeat per se, which as you say was expected and indeed predicted on this forum before a ball had been bowled.
Rather it was the abject, supine nature of the defeat and the seeming lack of any fight, desire or application after two wins which should have put confidence higher than it had been all season.
That's why even Bruce Talbot, who seldom if ever criticises anything, put the boot in. Hope he doesn't have his press box tea-and-cakes taken away as a punishment when Sussex return to Hove for the Worcs game!

Would Zac please collect his toys and place them back in the pram! Joyce for Haines who is back at College this week anyway. I too would play Salt and Hudson-Prentice and if fit Garton.

If Zac Toys-out-of-the-pram-asi doesn't like the 'negativity' of Chris Adams' column, he should read what Sussex members are saying in the Argus. Have a read of the angry comments on the Argus website - they make this forum's criticisms seem mild and they make Grizzly sound like an apologist for the current regime. There are four or five SCCC members saying they won't renew next year and calls for a mass clear-out of management at every level with Adams and Prior coming in. Read the comments here: www.theargus.co.uk/sport/cricket/generalcricket/14720338.Sussex_suffer_defeat_to_Kent_at_Hove/I just wonder ... could Tetchymasi's preposterous attack on Adams prove to be a defining moment? It will have sent Adams a clear message that not only is he feared and hated by the current regime (for what reasons I'm still unclear) but that he has nothing left to lose by moving against them. A 1997-style putsch with Adams in the Marlar role and Prior as Piggott? A monied backer would help, but surely between them they could find some financial muscle which would seal the deal in showing the current regime the door? The twentieth anniversary of the 1997 Marlar/Piggott/May insurrection is just a few months away ...a perfect time for a repeat performance?

Leics have named a 15 man squad: Horton, Robson, Dexter, Cosgrove (capt), Pettini, Eckersley (w/k), Hill, Sayer, McKay, Raine, Jones, Klein, Shreck, Chappell, Freckingham.
So McKay back from injury and interesting that they have named Eckersely as wkt rather than Hill. Someone said the other day that he'd given up keeping. With Niall O'Brien gone he appears to have taken it up again...

You don't need a good bowling attack against Sussex at the moment, just a good slip cordon, anything outside off and they'll have a waft at it. Failing that they'll go for two when there's only one there and run themselves out.

Apart from Magoffin, Archer seems to be the only fast bowler who doesn't break down every other match.
Jordan's fitness has been an issue throughout his career (and led to the Inner Circle experts condemning his signing as an injury-prone liability).
Robinson has been unfit with shin splints for six weeks and is only now returning to the side.
Shahzad appears never to have fully recovered from the injuries that curtailed his season in 2015 - at which point, let us not forget, he was Sussex's fastest and most effective bowler by some way.
Mills cannot bowl more than four overs.
Hatchett is a permanent crock.
Garton and Whittingham are incapable of playing two consecutive matches before retiring to the treatment table. Will we see either of them again this season? I raher doubt it.
Meanwhile Wright misses his eight CC match of the season, meaning Ben Brown now has more experience as a captan than the captain...

Sakande and Briggs miss out.
Uncontested toss, Sussex bowl first.
