Sussex rightly proud that Delray Rawlins is selected for a group of "Young Lions" to train in Loughborough and then Dubai this winter, but he seems to be (almost, see below) the only Sussex player out of a whole horde of players who are on the "pathway" to full international selection (apologies for the cringe-making vocabulary). One who seems to have stepped off the pathway, or perhaps was never on it, is Jofra Archer, who many people would regard as not just the Sussex find of the year but potentially one of the best finds to arrive in county cricket with no reputation behind him. I seem to recall early interviews and biographical notes that suggested he was keen to be considered for England, and qualifies through at least one of his parents holding a UK passport. Has something changed? Rawlins played for Bermuda under-19s as recently as July 2015, so Jofra's own West Indies U-19 career should not make him any different. Does anyone know more? Meanwhile, quite unremarked by Sussex in their variant on the ECB Press Release George Garton will "..train at counties / Loughborough in 2016, then warm-weather camp at Potchefstroom in January 2017" as part of the Pace Programme (I swear I am not making up these silly names).

It is interesting that the much vaunted Yorkshire Academy can only supply one player to this 50 man squad. Their cupboard really is bare and they will struggle sooner rather than later without more recruits from outside.
The most glaring omission to me is Jamie Porter of Essex who has just taken over 50 wickets.

I don't know the rules regarding these things but perhaps as Rawlings is from a British Overseas Territory he automatically qualifies?
Anyway, well done to him and to Garton.

Not very surprising, but still dispiriting, to note that of 53 names, including some who may benefit just from one camp or will train while recovering from injury, 40 are from Division 1 counties and only 13 from Division Two. The biggest county representations, despite all the talk about the northern academies are from Surrey and Somerset ( 8 apiece) and from Middlesex (7). The only county not to have even one player chosen is Northants.

The England Lions squads for Sri Lanka between 6 Feb and 13 March - no indication yet of itinerary or split between first class and one-day fixtures - contains some good names, and some familiar ones, but doesn't suggest much difference in strategy. Five fastish bowlers in the four-day game squad, and just the two spinners, Rayner and Leach. Poysdn is in the 50 over squad but not Leach - why?
England Lions four-day squad: Keaton Jennings (capt), Haseeb Hameed, Nick Gubbins, Tom Alsop, Tom Westley, Joe Clarke, Liam Livingstone, Ben Foakes, Sam Curran, Tom Curran, Toby Roland-Jones, Tom Helm, Craig Overton, Ollie Rayner, Jack Leach
England Lions 50-over squad: Keaton Jennings (capt), Daniel Bell-Drummond, Tom Alsop, Ben Duckett, Joe Clarke, Liam Livingstone, Ben Foakes, Sam Curran, Tom Curran, Craig Overton, Tom Helm, James Fuller, Ollie Rayner, Josh Poysden

The four day squad contains 13 players who were playing Div One cricket last season and one (Westley) who will be playing in Div One this coming season. That leaves Joe Clarke of Worcs as the sole Div Two representative among 15 players (although Jennings, of course, will be playing in Div Two this coming season after forcing his way into the Test side on the strength of Div One runs). Significantly, Div Two batsmen Duckett and Bell-Drummond have been omitted from the four day squad and only make the 50 over squad and I would guess young Joe Clarke has already been told by someone like Flower or Strauss that if Worcs don't get promoted next season, he will need to move to a Div One county to further his Test ambitions.

Leach is not in the 50 over squad because he rarely plays that format for Somerset. They prefer Waller & Van Der Merwe for one day matches. The surprising names to me are Helm who has never done anything, seems always injured and did nothing on loan at Glamorgan last season. Jamie Porter should be ahead of him. Poysden is the other I can see no case for.
