The latest threat to the finances of the International-hosting grounds in England is the potential cancellation of the ICC Champions Trophy next summer. This provides for 15 matches at three grounds (Edgbaston, Cardiff and The Oval) between 1st and 18th June, neatly bifurcating the two white-ball formats of England v South Africa Nick Hoult's article describes how in the fallout from the Indian High Court rulings over future governance of the IPL there must be a fifteen day gap before and after the IPL. There is no question of cancelling or shifting the dates of the IPL so Indian participation is threatened, and with renewed tensions between India and Pakistan in Kashmir the prospect of India and Pakistan appearing in the final stages would also appear intolerable. Without either side the legitimacy of a Champions Trophy would be pretty questionable. www.telegraph.co.uk/cricket/2016/10/04/ecb-to-meet-india-counterparts-to-find-out-whether-they-will-pul/The bad news is that Glies Clarke will be flying out, with Tom Harrison, to discuss this with BCCI officials at next week's ICC quarterly meeting. That should ensure something sleazy and opportunistic being worked out.

If it is cancelled we can have another 20/20 tournament instead.

Bench strength (noun)
Sounds like an intra-gym ranking metric. Is actually a euphemism for not playing your best XI due to overly rigid adherence to an outdated selection hierarchy.
Perhaps it's premature to be talking about England's ideal Champions Trophy XI, with the ODIs v. SA to come first. But no more premature than it was for Morgan and Bayliss to announce that half the squad would need to be wiped out before Bairstow gets a game in the CT.
Of all the players in Bairstow's way, Buttler is of course one of the main obstacles. And he does possess outlandish talents, but this year I wouldn't want to rely on him in a crisis. Buttler has averaged just an OK-ish 27 in the IPL. Prior to that, and since getting 76 on his return to the England Test side in India last December (I did this one before on here, conveniently), his sequence of scores was terrifying:-
8, 1, 6*, 5, 6*, 31, 10, 11, 15, 0, 14, 0, 7
Bairstow is averaging 86 this season from four RL50 games and two ODIs. That must count for something?! Of course the likelihood is that Buttler will do better than those scores of his would suggest, and that Bairstow (were he to be picked) wouldn't be able to maintain quite the level of 50-over form he's shown so far this year. But I really don't see that his selection for the CT should be so out of the question that the team management feels the need to broadcast the fact three weeks in advance. No wonder he's got a bit of a monk-on.
Well if Buttler plays, I'd leave Moeen out. Never understood the protection order on his place in the team. And if Moeen must stay, then Stokes. Aside from his IPL hundred that you may have read about, he's scored 170 from 10 completed innings out there. And his ODI record is a bit unremarkable. But of course Stokes won't be left out. His captain thinks he might be the best player in the world. (He definitely has something, but that's pushing it a bit).
Slightly interesting perhaps to compare the England squad's ODI batting averages and strike-rates.
Root 49 at 86 Roy 39 at 103 Hales 39 at 96 Morgan 38 at 88 Bairstow 37 at 91 Buttler 36 at 118 Stokes 30 at 98 Rashid 27 at 112 Billings 27 at 94 Moeen 26 at 100 Woakes 25 at 87 Plunkett 22 at 101 Willey 14 at 70
Wood 34 at 106 (4 innings with 3 not outs) Ball 28 at 127 (1 innings)
And the bowling averages and economy-rates while I'm about it.
Ball 28 at 5.8 Plunkett 31 at 5.8 Woakes 33 at 5.6 Rashid 33 at 5.6 Willey 33 at 5.6 Stokes 38 at 6.1 Wood 43 at 5.7 Moeen 49 at 5.0

All the pundits seem utterly stumped by how to get Bairstow in. To me it's obvious; Bairstow for Ali, Root can do his job with the ball and Stokes or Buttler can do a better one with the bat at seven. Bairstow is the second or third best batsman in the country and he should be in our eleven.
Hales Roy Root Morgan Bairstow Stokes Buttler Rashid Woakes Plunkett Wood

Popular tournament on here. I only saw the highlights yesterday but England looked dismal. It didn't strike me as 'one of those off days' for a team that plays a certain way, seemed like something else went wrong - something in the mysterious mind. That's what I got from an hour long highlights show anyway. Very disappointing.
