At what point do we admit that this tour has been an unmitigated disaster? Of those playing in this test I would not be at all surprised if only four feature in the first ashes test next winter. Bairstow, Root, Stokes and possibly Ali may be the only survivors. We are breaking records consistently but for all the wrong reasons. If there is another capitulation tomorrow, on that pitch, there will be no excuses. I agree with this and the way that many English commentators (and s&f) are trying to play down how disastrous it has been on the grounds that we expectd to lose is jingoistic. England have been clueless in every department - and that's after the huge advantage of winning the toss four times out of five. Cook told us after the last test that he thought 400 as a first innings score was 'above par'. So India went and scored 630 and England lost by an innings . Must do better says the captain, so they score 470. This time we really must be above par and have put ourselves in a position to control the match, he reckoned . So India go and score 750. I can't imagine he has any stomach to continue as captain, regardless of whether England capitulate again tomorrow or scrape a draw. According to Dobell's latest, which cannot be called a report but is pure polemic , it's all the ECB's fault : www.espncricinfo.com/india-v-england-2016-17/content/story/1073453.htmlI responded as follows: "Not sure England's calamities can be blamed so heavily on T20. India has for years been criticised as the market leader in prioritising white ball cricket via the IPL at the expense of Test cricket. Yet they have shown in this series that they continue to produce batsmen with the application to occupy the crease for days on end and potent spinners whose skills are not merely shaped by having to bowl four overs of pace-off containment. Why can't England?
If it really is down to "the system", what is it that the BCCI is doing right that the much-maligned ECB is not? And why is the Ranji Trophy (in which most teams only play eight matches per season) producing better long-form cricketers than the CC (in which every team last season played 16 matches)?"
It's a reasonable and valid response, backed up by factual argument. Yet I've posted it twice and both times it has been deleted. Why? Well I can only guess that it's because in Dobell's narcissistic bubble world , you're only allowed to agree with him, hence the plethora of comments saying "Well written Mr.Dobell" and "It is a wonderful article". I'm about to post again saying it's the most profound and honest piece of cricket journalism I've ever read. Just to expose cricinfo's nauseating hypocrisy when they print it!

Another pathetic collapse, triggered initially by Moeen's seeming inability to defend. What a dismal tour this has been.

Wow , that really was saving the worst until last. Absolutely shameful by England. No fight - and no brains because some of those dismissals were absolutely ridiculous.
This tour has almost been as bad as the Ashes in 2013-14.
Yes, we expected to lose. But England kept winning the toss and the pitches for the most part were not the raging turners that were expected but decent cricket wickets. So we should have done better than the admittedly low expectations.
Instead we did worse. Scoring 400 and 470 in consecutive first innings and still losing both games by an innings is unprecedented After six defeats in the last eight tests against three different opponents, I'd expect both Cook and Bayliss to stand down.
And no, England's humiliation is not because the ECB have prioritised white ball cricket over Tests. If it was down to that how come the Indian Test side has got stronger not weaker since the IPL took over as the showpiece event?

Unbelievably Bayliss wasn't there today to see England's most abject batting performance of the entire series. He missed seeing two of his batsmen getting caught in the deep when they were supposed to be batting to save the match because he flew home to Australia the previous day.
Some are already calling for him to stay there.
Farbrace now doing the end of series interviews because his boss isn't around and Dobell tweeting that Farbrace should take over.
Atherton says Cook has had enough and expects him to stand down...

There are claims on social media that the story was deliberately leaked to deflect criticism of England's botched selections as the post-mortems begin on the reasons for the 4-0 humiliation. Fingers are being pointed at the source. Here are a couple of visual clues:

l'affaire Leach becomes the latest of Elizabeth Ammons crusading Twitter obsessions:
Now spoken to 3 umpires all of whom said they were surprised about Leach's action and hadn't heard any whispers or rumours or concerns.
Meanwhile Lawrence Booth, who broke the story, had this interesting exchnage with David Hopps:
David Hopps @davidkhopps 15h15 hours ago
@the_topspin Congrats on this one... needed revealing. (Preferably by the ECB as their basic contract with cricket supporters!)
Lawrence Booth @the_topspin 15h15 hours ago
@davidkhopps Ta. Yes, naively handled. Don't think everyone in England set-up agreed with the way it was done.

To lose the last 6 wickets for 15 is unacceptable. So much for Bayliss's positive approach. I think he is better suited to one day cricket and has no real grasp of Test match cricket. This is the 7th test England have lost this year and will probably be 8 soon, so we have gone backwards as a test team. I would allow Bayliss to carry on with the one day side to after the Champions trophy but we should begin actively seeking a coach who understands what Test match cricket is about. From what I heard Kohli rarely, if at all, hit the ball in the air so positive cricket does not mean wild swipes. Can we not give the job to Farbrace?

I am delighted to read that a spinner wins this year's 'ICC World Player of the Year'. 30 year-old Ravichandran Ashwin is the third Indian to win the Sir Garfield Sobers trophy and is also 'ICC Test Cricketer of the Year'. Ashwin took 48 wickets and scored 336 runs in eight Tests, as well as 27 wickets in 19 T20 internationals. Will this encourage county cricket and England to nurture young spin talent and change their pitches to suit them? I very much doubt it. Meanwhile, England skipper Alastair Cook was named captain of the ICC Test team of 2016 as the voting period closed in September - before England's recent Test series defeats. Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes also feature but most surprisingly, India's Virat Kohli missed out. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/38401663

I think Mrs D's idea of Farbrace to take over is a good one. Bayliss has shown no interest in the county game and his test team have gone backwards as quickly as his one day team has progressed. Let him concentrate on the stuff he has expertise in.

Both sides believe it is a wicket for bowling in the ist ODI. India won the toss and put England in, and England leaving out their strongest batsmen Bairstow and in form one Billings. We shall see.

Leaving out the top scorer from each of the warm-up games is a brave call.

Looking comfortable at 204 -3 from 35 overs, which suggests that the pitch ought to be good enough for something well over 300. It will need to be, with Kohli, Dhoni and the fast-scoring openers all capable of creaming runs from Willey and Woakes. Stokes could be the decisive man with bat and ball.

Well done Roy, Root and particularly Stokes for that imaginative charge. Now for the bowling.
