Good to see that Australia do humiliating collapses after century opening stands just as well as England. www.espncricinfo.com/australia-v-south-africa-2016-17/engine/match/1000851.htmlNow, what were those headlines about humiliation and "catalogues of shame"? A big shout-out to Keshav Maharaj, 3 wickets on debut for South Africa, and bringing back some Sussex reminiscences from his season for Cuckfield in 2013: 45 wickets at 15.60.

Utterly pathetic from Australia. www.espncricinfo.com/australia-v-south-africa-2016-17/engine/match/1000853.htmlMennie looks an average Shield bowler when Bird, Behrendorf or Sayers( the swing bowler with 17 wickets in 2 Shield games) were more obvious choices in an all seam attack. In a failing team to retain the 37yo Voges and replace the 33yo S Marsh with the 32yo Ferguson is just nonsense. Rebuild with the likes of Bancroft, Head, Patterson , Maddinson etc and add some energy and fight. For Ferguson to be run out on test debut for 3 when his team were bowled for 85 is utterly ridiculous.

As Australia lost 5 wickets in the day, and at one stage were 76-4 (161-14 wickets) it would suggest that pitch or atmospheric conditions had a bit to do with it. As Australia showed in England last year, the panic can set in very quickly and the team don't seem to have the old ability to rise above it. At one time it would have been Hussey and Gilchrist who righted the ship, then later on Haddin. They look as if they are swapping players around to try and find the right balance, and that's a hazard that can't be avoided. England have gone through the same kind of process in the last couple of years and have nearly come through the other side.
South Africa have flaws, but plenty of attack and next summer should be a storming series against England.

The likes of Burns, Khawaja and both Marshes would never have got near a cap a few seasons ago. Shows how far they have sunk. They have exciting fast bowlers but they always seem to be injured.

This is a South African team without De Villiers and Stein, yet they are thrashing the Aussies. I do not think South Africa have suddenly become exceptional so how bad are Australia?
