A good story from Nick Hoult in the Daily Telegraph about the different compensatory payments to counties for Test players and others highlights how involvement in this league not only sharpens player's white ball skills but will actually strengthen the counties financially. www.telegraph.co.uk/cricket/2017/01/30/ben-stokes-faces-sacrificing-100000-central-contract-play-ipl/Using Ben Stokes as the prime example, Hoult identifies the crucial negotiation made by the PCA with the ECB last year that means that England players on Test contracts will lose 0.5% of their salary for each day they are unavailable on IPL duty, whereas those on white ball contracts will be docked a much lesserr amount. "The deduction is to fund payments from the ECB to compensate the counties for the fact their player is unavailable at a time when he could be playing domestic cricket. The money will be split among the counties and paid as top-up grants for their academies." It is a pragmatic example of a compromise between expectations for individual stars to shine in the brightest constellations available, and the needs and rights of the counties who nurtured these talents to build financial stability and bring on the next generation. It could also be seen as a possible example of the kind of deal-making that will be necessary when the new English "franchises" are developed.

England players available to franchisees in the auction, prices in lakhs, each lakh about £120, although rumour suggests management fees and other expenses eat heavily into the final fee payable:
Eoin Morgan England Batsman 48 SRH 200 Benjamin Stokes England All-rounder 200 Chris Woakes England All-rounder 200 Jonny Bairstow England Wk/Batsman 150 Alex Hales England Batsman 100 Jason Roy England Batsman 100 Chris Jordan England All-rounder 9 RCB 50 Tymal Solomon Mills England Bowler 50 Muhammad Yasir Arafat England All-rounder 50

Interesting that Mills and Jordan lag behind Hales and Roy, although their effectiveness this winter has been so marked. I am not sure why Yasir Arafat is listed as an English cricketer.

Does Yasir Arafat have an English citizenship? If so it would be the only way he could get into the IPL draft as Pakistanis are not allowed.
It makes sense for Mills to set his price low. He only earns when he is playing in these T20 competitions so he needs to maximise the chance that he gets a contract surely?

I presume the number 50 against Arafat's name is his age.

I presume the number 50 against Arafat's name is his age. Or the number of teams he has played for?

Tymal Mills bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for INR 12 crores, Chris Jordan to Sunrisers Hyderabad for 50 lakhs.
Those figures correspondent to about £1.4 million for Mills, £60, 000 for Jordan. Mills is second only to Stokes in the earnings stakes - if they get the headline sum or anything like it.

See Wiese unsold ... so guess will arrive at Sussex earlier.

See Wiese unsold ... so guess will arrive at Sussex earlier. Maybe, but once the auction round is completed clubs can go round the pool of unsold players to fill up their teams, and probably get better bargains. Wiese would have been cheaper than Jordan anyway, and might be a really good punt for a side needing a hit the deck bowler and slogger who doesn't cost too much. Sussex of course would like the same thing.

A rather large sum for Tymal in the IPL auction then. Surely now buying meals for Luke Wright for the rest of their stay in the UAE?
Do the counties get any part of this money? I can see why Sussex wouldn't but Surrey will be losing Roy for a significant amount of time and surely will get some money out of this?

I'm pleased for Tymal as this is his only way of securing a financial future but shocked that he went for so much when he's only a one dimensional player and not yet a game changer. Compared to CJ who only went for £60,000. I know who I'd pick first in a line up.

Compared to CJ who only went for £60,000. I know who I'd pick first in a line up. Yes, I agree. I think the media hype around Mills has been very intense and promoted a bit of a bubble reputation. On the one hand he is a terrifyingly fast bowler who has learnt the ability to bowl the slower ball, but he hasn't yet done so consistently. In a way he has become a symbol of the future of this version of cricket, painted in simple primary colours, denoting speed, aggression, and a charismatic image. Yet Jordan, who can change the game as much with his fielding or with the bat - remember the 6 to win the match against Warwickshire in the championship a couple of years back? - doesn't seem to be promoted in the same way. I hiope for Mills's sake that the bubble doesn't get pricked too soon and with too disastrous effects.

On his day, his 4 overs can be devastating; on other days he will look ordinary. Very best of luck, Tymal; just visualise that you're bowling to Chris Gayle at Hove!
