The Times (Ivo Tennant) reports today that there are problems with a visa for Kent Assistant Coach Allan Donald who" might be forced to miss the entire season because he does not have the appropriate coaching qualification". Apparently Kent are looking for a replacement " for at least the first two months of the season" and had not "...appreciated ........that the Home Office stipulates that professional coaches who come from abroad to England require a level three qualification" which Donald has yet to obtain. After problems over a visa for Coach Graham Ford a few years back (the assumption of supporters being that he spent the first two months of a season coaching Kent by phone) you'd have thought Kent might have been on top of the visa problem by now!

From a Kent spokesman (and the daily mail)
“He hasn’t been denied a visa, we’re waiting on an application,” he said. “It’s a case of which visa he’s entitled to. The ECB has guidelines as to which qualifications you should hold, if that’s for a head coach or an assistant coach – he won’t be here year round, only for the domestic season.
“He’s got a British wife so he could get a spousal visa, or he could do some media work and get a visa that way. We’re pretty relaxed about it. The application can take several weeks or even months if there are complications. "

The Times quotes the Kent CEO as saying" Allan has a level two qualification but he will only be able to work for us on a voluntary basis or through media work". The article raises the possibility of a spousal exemption or a visa through media work, but it adds that "Neither, though, would ensure that he would be able to coach professionally". The implication seems to be that entry to the country with a spousal exemption, or to do media work, does not bring with it the automatic right to coach professionally but, as I say, that is only an implication.

If you enjoy Allan Donald's embarrassingly token (yet over-familiar) cheerleading-from-exile as much as I do, you'll like the gnomic tweet he posted this evening ahead of Kent's penultimate T20 Blast match:-
"Good luck to @kentcricket for the last 2 championship games. Big push to go up to Div 1."
Classic.
