Kent are set to announce their new coach in January, some six months after club and coach agreed that his contract would not be renewed (although to be fair it was not officially announced and the post advertised until mid-October).
I know two names on the shortlist - Matt Walker and Wayne Noon. I'm told at least one overseas candidate was also shortlisted and interviewed.
So who do the new Kent recruits to this site hope it will be or think it will be?

Personally, I hope Matt Walker gets it. He deserves it, having done his "apprenticeship" as Batting/asst coach at Essex and then the same at Kent. He knows the players and in particular the young ones who have needed nurturing! I know you and others will look at how things changed at Sussex(or didn't) post Robinson with Davis taking over last season. I believe that "Walks" has the respect of the dressing room and will do a good job! I hope it is Matt as he a very approachable coach who will always speak his mind when he needs to!

I kind of hope Walker gets it, too, although Kent have traditionally been deeply mistrustful of English coaches. I think they have had an almost unbroken run of overseas coaches over the last 20 or more seasons, with Wright, Inverarity, Ford and Adams, representing four different Test nations.
The only exception was not a happy one. In Farbrace's two disastrous seasons in charge, second bottom in Div One brought relegation, followed by second bottom in div two and humiliation!

Pretty certain Chris Adams also applied. My source doesn't know if he was shortlisted...
Which reminds me of the last time Adams went for an 'interview' at Kent, in the winter of 1997/98 when he was leaving Derbyshire.
He arrived at the St Lawrence ground in Canterbury with his agent to discuss terms, whereupon the Kent CEO (still called club sec. at the time and a military chap named Brigadier Stuart Anderson) invited Adams into the boardroom and imperiously instructed his agent to wait in the car, as Kent did not talk to agents.
Adams told the Brigadier to get stuffed and climbed back into the car - a Roller, according to Kent folklore - and drove to Hove, where his agent was politely welcomed by Tony Piggot and Adams signed on the dotted line.
The Brigadier's only other claim to fame was that he made headlines when he called for the Barmy Army to be banned from the world's cricket grounds, declaring: "The game is a unique, peaceful tapestry of village greens and lime trees. These people spoil the spectacle. I am not a fuddy-duddy, but their presence at grounds is totally inappropriate."

It's Matt Walker's 43rd birthday today... I guess a few of us are wondering whether he'll get the job as Kent coach as his best birthday present...?

Personally, and I readily accept there are exceptions, I think that elevation to the senior coaching job from within a club, tends not to work, whatever the sport. If it was to be Matt Walker, though, I hope I'm proved wrong!

The claim that they were delaying looking for an overseas/kolpak recruit until the new coach was announced ... would suggest they were expecting new blood.

It will be very interesting to see what happens. An overseas appointment would mean that five of Kent's last six coaches wil not have come from domestic cricket, with Farbrace the only exception (and even he joined from a job with the Sri Lankan team, I seem to remember.)
But Kent's high-profile overseas coaches never achieved very much (one 40 over league title under John Wright, I think, and one T20 trophy under Graham Ford). So I'd be tempted to go for the loyal stalwart, whose birthday it is today and whom I think has spent 22 of the last 27 seasons on the Kent staff, first as player and then as assistant coach.

Will just have to see if he gets it and how he does I suppose. i liked Matt as a player of course but that's not really relevant. Not much point commenting on rumours and whispers.

not going to argue with that.
it was more a case of there not being much response on this thread after person/people had gone to the trouble to make space for us. hope the lack of enthusiasm to date is just down to it being off season.

That would be an interesting combination, with Donald having overall responsibility. Kent have a recent history of recruiting S African bowlers, and with the bowling requiring strengthening, Donald may know where to look.

I was thinking: Walker i/c batting/fielding; Donald i/c fast bowling (& perhaps in overall charge), Patel i/c spinners - could be a good framework... [On edit - not quite right; Matt Walker is in overall charge, and - of course - I forgot that Mark Ealham is also on the staff part-time]

Thanks for posting the link to that. if it's all true then it explains why it has taken Kent so long to fill the post. First, they tried to get Matthew Mott, but he couldn't agree terms. Then they turned to Allan Donald, but had to wait until the position had been resolved between Warwicks and Lancs over Giles, because Donald had applied for a job at Edgbaston, where he had previously played and coached extensively, of course. So Matt Walker becomes head coach with AD as director of cricket, a post Kent has had in the past (Graham Ford had the title, I think) but declined to offer to Adams, who was downgraded to head coach. Could Donald be Kent's Trump card? g roan....
