The shortlist has been announced for the 2014 LVCC Breakthrough Player award and is : Zafar Ansari (Surrey), Alex Lees (Yorkshire), Craig Overton (Somerset), Sam Hain (Warwickshire), Ben Cox (Worcestershire), Adam Riley (Kent), Jason Roy (Surrey), Reece Topley (Essex), Lewis Gregory (Somerset) and Will Tavaré (Gloucestershire).
Now in its third year, the shortlist for the award has been expanded from the six announced in previous seasons.
2013: Ballance, Borthwick, Rory Burns, Shiv Thakor, Luke Wells and David Willey.
2012: Redfern, Balance, Root, Meaker, Kerrigan and Matt Coles.
Of the 12 nominees from 2012 and 2013, four have already played Test cricket (Root, Balance, Kerrigan and Borthwick). Two have been sacked/moved on (Coles and Redfern) and two are currently languishing in their county second elevens (Meaker and Thakor). So a mixed bag. I wonder what the future holds for the 2014 crop?

I wonder what the future holds for the 2014 crop? Who were the winners in 2012 and 2013? And what are the criteria? Since Lees went to Sri Lanka with England Lions in the winter, hasn't he already made a breakthrough? And wan't Reece Toply hailed as the future of left-arm fastish bowling at least a year ago? This sounds like a very manufactured award. History isn't very kind to these things. Look at the Young Cricketer of the Year awards (which this seems to mimic); lots of great names then an undisguised clunker or two, for example, Peter May, Freddie Trueman, Colin Cowdrey, Peter Loader, Brian Taylor. Brian Taylor? And again after an illustrious period that contained Boycott, Brearley, Knott, Underwood and Greig, within a year or two John Whitehouse and Dudley Owen-Thomas. Time is the best judge of these things, and rasies no more expectations from cricketers than it does from less sporting types on the nature of youthful promise and its fruition.

Root won it the first year, and Rory Burns last year.
It's an official LVCC award, sponsored by LV and the PCA and the judges include Mike Gatting and Mark Wallace, as PCA chairman.
I may have got it wrong about this year's list being longer. In past years they may have started out with ten names, and then whittled it down to six and ultimately one. I'm not sure, but the lists above are the only ones I could find.
You can look for anaomalies (Ballance got listed two years running - how many breakthroughs are you allowed?)But it seems rather a good initiative - even if the end result seems to be that you're almost as likely to end up in your county's second XI as in the England team!
As for this year's winner, I think I'd probably go for Ansari.

The YCCC website says that this is a "longlist" which will be reduced to six when voting starts in August. I agree that you should not be on the list more than once.I would choose Ben Cox.
