It's that time of year again when the rumours swirl, the portents are eagerly observed and the sayings and doings of Messrs Vaughan, Strauss, Dobell and a few others are scrutinised as closely as Chris Packham examining the faeces of an otter.
Should Cook resign? And if so, when? Should Root be captain from the start of the English season or should that be deferred, perhaps until the touring team is chosen in September?
Make your choices in our first poll of 2017, open to all members until Thursday 12 January.

I've voted "Don't know" because I don't know how Cook himself feels about his position. Without that knowledge, I'm not sure you can decide what's best for England, and whether he should resign or stay.

Without that knowledge, I'm not sure you can decide what's best for England, and whether he should resign or stay. Personally I'm pretty certain he will conclude that he's done it for long enough. But I've also voted don't know as I feel that unless England want to sack him (which we are told they don't) then it's entirely down to him. I'll back him if he decides to stay and will similarly support his decision if he decides to go. If it was a case of Strauss telling him it was time to give it up for the good of the side and his own form, I'd probably have a stronger opinion. But as it stands... just do whatever you think is best for both you and the England team, Alastair. I think he has earned the right for people to respect his decision, whatever he decides.

Wouldn't this poll be more pertinent if Morgan were substituted in place of Cook?

Thanks to all who voted. It is overwhelmingly clear that you don't want him to leave straight away, with a sizeable majority wanting him to stay on until the Ashes. It seems the commentators agree with you and the mood has changed from last week's certainty about handing over to Root, to one where today's meeting will "chew over issues". Let us hope they will not leave a bad taste in the mouth.

Well I reckon I got it spot on - by sitting on the fence!!!
