In fact it turns out they are doing the job we want them to do, helping to get youngsters interested in cricket, often despite the uncaring attitudes of many who sit on councils and school governing boards and deny funds for grounds and facilities. "Sussex have already had over 100 expressions of interest, and with the support of the county’s recreational cricket clubs, they will be establishing over 70 centres, engaging in excess of 2000 five to eight year-olds this summer." Maybe one or two of these kids might break the mould in the next few years and become professional cricketers without the need for charitable scholarships. Maybe there will be many more who play the game strongly at club level, without quite feeling able to make the traansition. And there will possibly be a lot more who are inspired to watch, to come to matches, to delight in the game.
