Meanwhile Somerset bowled out for 249 with 34 balls still to bowl. If Hampshire can win, and of course if Sussex prevail, then it all starts to get very interesting, with the possibility of Sussex going straight through to the semi-finals...lots of conjecture, of course, but this is far better speculation than that a week or so ago of Sussex failing to win anything at all this season. Whoa! Whoa! Steady on now. Let's take things slowly.

If we can get rid of Cook & ten Doeschate we could really restrict them here.

Does anyone else find the 50 Over sky commentary to be rather tedious and cliche-laden?

Hampshire look almost certain to win. And they are almost there now, which makes things more intriguing for Sussex IF they can win this. 295 is about 50 more than I thought Essex would get, until Cook and Ten Doeschate started to accelerate. Now it is all up to the chase.Fingers crossed.

Yeah, the top 6 didn't quite put on enough before they were dismissed. It was frankly miraculous the Jofra managed to get us that close. Should have seen out the run-a-ball at the end though.

Does anyone else find the 50 Over sky commentary to be rather tedious and cliche-laden? And complete with three former Essex players

I also didn't see much of the Sussex bowling, what pace was Archer clocking?

Fielding from both teams was shocking! Good effort in the end by Sussex, but disappointing to lose needing 11 off 12 with a Taylor having a big swing but if that's how he normally plays fair enough.

While I followed this match from afar (constant perusals on a mobile phone BBC website), the one positive that came over from last night and a word to describe Sussex was 'battling'. A description that didn't exist a few weeks ago. The 'old' Sussex would have given up the ghost and collapsed to 150 all out.
So, for that alone, I see a club remaining "on the up". Onwards to Sunday, where Gloucestershire is a must win for any hope of a QF place.

I also didn't see much of the Sussex bowling, what pace was Archer clocking? 80-85mph Taylor got it up to 88mph and bowled a good line and length with swing and movement off the pitch in his first spell. Shahzad was pretty average apart from one delivery which ten Doeschate edged straight up in the air when he was on 38 and which the keeper would have held but Shahzad called and dropped! The ground fielding from both teams was poor but the senseless 'going for glory' shot selection from Sussex was where we lost the game IMO.

That fielding effort from Shahzad was very poor, even more so when you consider that its a relatively new keeper behind the stumps who perhaps wouldn't have the confidence to call over a senior player for the catch.
Its a decent pace from Archer considering how he bowls, mid 80's is about right for moving the ball in the air and off the pitch.

There must be a better mathematician on here than me, but anyway I've been looking quite hard at this from the point of view of Kent's desperate situation (more by way of a diverting conundrum than with any realistic hope of Kent reaching the quarter-finals). Along the way I found that, as things stand, Sussex don't necessarily have to beat Gloucestershire to qualify. Chances are that Sussex will have to win both their remaining games (in which case they'll definitely go through), but some combinations of results would let them into the QFs even with a defeat to Gloucs. (Conceivably that will no longer be the case come Sunday!)
