South Africa A finish the day on 151/6, 3 wickets for Beer and 1 apiece for Garton, Sakande and Briggs.
The follow on target is 309.

Are we sure this is South Africa A? Should have played our first team to even it out.
This is the closest thing to performing for the seconds that there is JB, but a considerably higher standard you'd think. Some people perform better on a bigger stage. Rawlins is probably one of them. If we're looking for competition to the comfy crew look no further than this game I reckon. Presumably Machan, Robinson, Whittingham & Co ain't fit enough yet.
An interesting bowl-off between Beer and Briggs should develop, should be encouraged and should be relevant.

. Both Machan and Robinson have been playing recently, Machan for Oxfordshire and Brighton & Hove and Robinson for the 2's last week. Either they're both nearly there fitness wise or there's other mischief afoot?

A theme that recurs in a lot of sports writing/autobiographies that I have read is how there are distinct levels in professional sport, each with much higher demands. As you imply, some step up, some don't. This is why it is so difficult in identifying talent, as if one person scores 150 for the 2s and another 50, it might not always be the first player who performs better when promoted.

9 down for 181 and a maiden first-class 5 wicket innings for Will Beer. Well done to him and to Briggs and Garton and all the team. I haven't been able to trace any report of the match but I assume SAA aren't fooling around but are genuinely being outplayed. If so that is highly significant for Sussex and future prospects because this side has several fringe Test players, U-19 players and One Day T20 internationals. It's hard to know the standard of overseas opposition by their averages, because domestic competitions do vary enormously in quality these days, much more than used to be the case, but to bowl out a side with several batsmen averaging in the upper 40s and to score those runs against bowlers who average 21 or so is very impressive.

181 all out and the follow on enforced.
20/2 at lunch with both wickets to Sakande.

181 all out and the follow on enforced. 20/2 at lunch with both wickets to Sakande. Billy Beer hero of the day. 6-29 and the best tally of his 1st class career. Just taken another in 2nd innings. Match could be over tonight, so a financial Saturday loss for Arundel CC. SA already look beaten. Hard to judge this match. A terrible SA performance or an outstanding Sussex?

An innings victory is impressive and way beyond my expectations. Can anyone comment on whether we were exceptionally good or they were exceptionally bad? Or, was it a bit of both?

Humble pie time for me, and loving every mouthful Who would have thought we'd see Will Beer take 11 wickets in a first class match for Sussex? To be fair, there's a few on here who have consistently said, give the guy a go in four day cricket. A little run in the side now? There will be a place up for grabs against Gloucestershire following big Vern's departure, Garton was probably favourite, but Will Beer has turned in the sort of performance that demands he play. Baking hot weather over the next few days might make two spinners a decent option

I just got back from a great day of cricket. There was a fair crowd in, to see Billy Beer have one of his greatest day in a Sussex uniform.
I have to say this and I don't mean to sound nasty, but on today's evidence, Briggs isn't fit to lace Will's boots, he leaked runs down the leg side time after time and generally looked pretty angry with himself, kicking the turf in frustration on more than one occasion. Maybe it wasn't the right surface for him.
Sakende had a good afternoon, especially when breaking the long partnership of Zonda and Mulder with the first ball of his last spell trapping Mulder plumb in front of his stumps. He looks a good prospect.
MOM for me has to be Billy Beer! It was nice walking past the dressing room after the match had finished, to hear "Good old Sussex by the sea" being sung with gusto by the lads, on my way back to the car park.

Well well well, the results of the bowl-off are in. To be fair Briggs has done alright lately, if not today, but he's never gonna get you 5-60 off 18 let alone 6-29 off 17. With Robinson it was personal for Beer, had to be, virtually ruined the lad's career. Davis has probably had no reason to consider him, until now. Should have been in the team years ago. If he does get a gig I hope we give him a proper run and not just forget about him if his first three overs go for 20.
Special mention to Sakande, Rawlins and Jenner too. To Briggs' batting as well - I have no idea how the man got a ton against what was presumably some of SA's best young bowlers. Did though.
Another quality win, the future's looking brighter.

Yes, I'm happily eating humble pie too, great win for our also rans.
I wouldn't get too carried away with Beers figures though, good as they were, on a dodgy out ground wicket. I seriously doubt whether he'd have done so well if the game had been played at Hove. Having said that he's certainly done enough to be given a chance.
