Wright shouldn't jack now, very selfish and immature, if it is his decision.
We don't recruit, it's against policy.

This explains the Wright issue. Only the youngsters will do and the off-shoots of Keith Greenfield. What a gamble the Club are taking - what a gamble. Good luck Luke. Take us to another Finals Day.

I didn’t see that one coming and, like others, I am curious about the whys. His pre-season gave me false optimism.

Look back at LW 4 day record over the past 3-4 years. He knew this year was probably a swansong so went to SA and a specialist batting coach to improve his technique for 4 day cricket. Unfortunately for him it was 2-3 too late. Pounds before runs. You can't blame him for that. I think Greenfield and Gillespie had identified this decline in 4 day scores and on the back of winter performances from others, decided they could push ahead with a youthful look. I applaud them for doing this. Too long in the past we have kept people going past sell by dates because of big salaries. To make this work though, Luke Wells needs to step up and get some BIG CC runs this year. Put his limited 1 day ambitions behind him and concentrate on batting only.

Chris Nash at the end of 2017, now Luke Wright at the start of 2019. Two experienced batsmen down, none have come in😡

It's a shame for Luke that her or in so much effort over the winter and turned down the chance of paying in the PCL to improve his red ball cricket only to be told he would be taking a backseat.
It's one of those situations that you can see both views, Sussex want to give as many chances as possible to the youngsters, but Luke has been loyal to the club and may well feel hard done.
Fingers crossed Luke had a great white ball season and the youngsters step up.

Crazy decision by the club to let him pack up red ball cricket. He still had a lot to offer and was clearly prepared to put in the hard work.
It leaves us with very little depth in the batting department. We are already stretched one game into the season having lost Finch with Laurie Evans being called into the squad who has struggled in red ball cricket in recent years. We now have a squad of 13 excluding Finch with no other specialist batsman waiting in the wings pushing for places.
Hopefully, we can bring in a specialist O/S top order batsman (can't see us getting a high-quality batsman from another club at this stage in the season). Not sure if he is signed up anywhere else yet but Travis Head has to be an option. He'll be very keen to cement his place in the test team with the Ashes coming up this year in England.

I agree I think it shafts us right over, batting has been weak for years and now it just gets weaker in experience and even numbers.

We've already signed our overseas Majik. A bowler, leaving us with two prospect quicks scratching their heads and a batting line-up more fragile than a Tory government. Oh Christ what if another batter gets injured? Or if Corbyn gets in? A frightening couple of thoughts. The club, like the country, are having a breakdown of some sort. The thinking goes awry.

Great news Luke has signed a new contract till the end of 2023. The first piece of good news we have had for several weeks. At least Luke has confidence in the club.

Yes it's excellent news! I was slightly concerned we would lose him, Luke has been a terrific player and servant. Quietly hoped he might get a first class game again given Gillespie has left although the contract is white ball only.
Delighted either way!

Yes very good news but shame only white ball as sure he could do a good job playing red ball too. Be interested to know if his decision or the club or maybe both.

I may well be wrong, but I had a feeling that Luke had decided against the red ball game, so as to prolong his white ball career for as long as possible. Does anyone else know?

Doesn't Luke have that long-term knee injury problem and the reason why he stopped bowling? It is possibly down to that and being the Captain of the T20 which is the only side to have enjoyed success in recent years, his salary is probably higher than most other cricketers at Sussex who play both formats.

In his last red ball season, he missed some four-day games due to back problems. However, I don't know if this is a long-term problem that is triggered by hanging around in the field for a few hours.
