Excellent rearguard recovery, and some. We are so much better when the keeper plays at seven Both Brown and Burgess are excellent at marshalling the tail in these sort of situations With our plethora of bowling all rounders, it pretty much guarantees us a decent total 107 for the first 5; 458 for the second 5. Would be interesting to see how the averages have been for the season as I don't think it's the first time the 'lower' order have been better. Here they are at present - we ought not to have to bat again. They include the Arundel game against the SA A side. Players highlighted in yellow are top 6, the rest highlighted in buff. Plenty of talent but no consistency, Wells and Van Zyl excepted, and now Burgess. The other point worth mentioning is that any side that runs through 27 players in a season with few injuries and only limited international calls really doesn't have a clear focus on what its best team should be.

Normal service has resumed as Read and Root both go past 100 and Notts are 285-5 at lunch. Whittingham losing his line and length completely and going at over 7 after bowing so well yesterday.

These are the situations where we miss the control that Mags brings

And I have been wrong before and I dare say I will be again, for so long as I watch this talented, inconsistent team that cannot seem to bring control to bear on the chances they create.

So, will we give Notts a sporting declaration and a better chance of promotion or not?

So, will we give Notts a sporting declaration and a better chance of promotion or not? Notts best chance of promotion is us batting all day and them securing a draw which would be good enough for them to go up. Don't see them risking losing chasing anything as a loss would see them miss out

Northants will be unlucky not to go up with 9 wins if they beat Leicestershire
