There’s a rumour going round that Northeast is leaving Kent. Not sure whether he is going north, south or west but a southwesterly direction would be good.

I saw Sam less than a month ago as he and the Comemrcial Director were at Plumpton as guests of one of the sponsors. He certainly gave no indication of someone who was about to leave Kent. He is contracted at Kent for another season and they have only just appointed his deputy. www.kentonline.co.uk/canterbury/sport/northeast-goig-nowhere-103263/

I heard this from someone well connected in Kent. I must admit I would only expect him to leave for a Div 1 team to enhance his England chances.

If he does leave, he does a year on his contract although he wouldn't be the first player to leave in contract, it is likely to be for a first division county like Notts, Surrey or Somerset. He needs to move to a division 1 team to enhance his England ambitions. There is no doubt in my mind that had he been playing for a first division county he would have been selected for England by now.

Could be going to Essex: Rumoured that Northeast is leaving Kent for a Div One club. Story has emerged not from Kent CCC but from Charlton Athletic FC, where Adam Riley and Adam Ball are season ticket holders, so it may have come from oe of them? Suggestion here www.essexoutfielder.co.uk/ind...31617#msg31617that Essex may be interested

I would like to think that we were feverishly working behind the scenes to put together a packages, one which would include the captaincy

He is captain at Kent so is the captaincy a big draw? Playing first division cricket is the only way he is going to realise his England ambitions.

Perhaps he formed a good relationship with Kent's former interim assistant coach.

From Domestic Cricket 247 cricket forum:
"Well, well, well, the plot thickens. Turns out the main reason Northeast is off is because Kent have sacked him as captain and want Denly or Billings to take over.
Essex, Hampshire, Surrey, Warwicks and Somerset are all after his signature.
He turned down a deal from Somerset last year and an offer from Hampshire two years before that, so I'd make Essex and Surrey favourites.
Can't imagine Matt Coles is too pleased at the possibility of him pitching up at Chelmsford. They were never exactly best buddies.
My old colleague Ivo Tennant is now running the story in The Times, but you read it here first a week ago.
I got the story not from any cricketing source but via Charlton Athletic FC . There are close links between Kent and CAFC and I wondered if it came from Kent players Ball and Riley, who are Charlton s/t holders and mates of Northeast. But it seems it emerged from something Derek Ufton let slip in the Charlton directors box during the match v Portsmouth at the Valley on Dec 9..."
My money would be on hims signing for Essex or Surrey.

Lots of chaps with Kent connections on this board. Any chance Sam will sign for Sussex?

It's been rumoured for some time that he wants to join a Div 1 county to enhance his England prospects.....

Allan Donald was still addressing tweets to the outgoing captain as recently as Saturday. This must all have happened in a bit of a rush.
@kentcricket @mattwalker275 Well just a week away from joining up with the team in Canterbury. Very excited to finally becoming part of the squad soon. @ivanthomas_5 @joed1986 @sambillings @sanortheast
At least Donald seems confident he'll be joining us now, presumably on a Kolpak deal from the look of it.

We have to try and make this happen Not since we managed to bring in Chris Adams, has there been such a good fit for Sussex, in my opinion anyway Like Adams, he could kick start a new Sussex renaissance It will be difficult, but not impossible. We’ve proven in the past, that we can match most, salary wise, for the right player He’d also be playing for a proven coach, and one that he’d previously worked with Staying in the area, may also be a selling point Yes we are not a Test ground, and are currently languishing in the second division, but with him on board, and an inspired overseas signing, I’m sure that would change Also, it’s a bit of a myth, that you need to be playing in the First Division to further your international ambitions Plenty of Division Two players have represented England in recent times Come on Rob, lets sell him the Sussex dream

I've heard we are definitely interested, not sure if we will be able to pull it off though.
