I did try to tell you, but I kept getting back "ECB have cleared Jordan to play county cricket from 1 May". Please try to understand that the county cricket employment relationship you used to know is dead. Only aspirant or veteran cricketers will now follow a strict pattern of working for a single employer. For all of the rest a much more fluid employment market exists, and it doesn't really matter whether the ECB encourages it. Large squads are inevitable and if they cannot be sustained then that limits the competitive prospects for the club. Totally get that, in fact I've been warning that this was likely to happen. The fact is, the club has not been particular proactive in assembling even a medium sized squad. Six seam bowlers, three of them novices, I don't think even the most impoverished of counties would operate with a squad like that But Sussex behaves as if it is one of the most impoverished counties. Financial prudence is at the heart of this 'strategy'.

Who pays Jordan wages? Sussex! So why is he playing in the IPL rather than for Sussex?

Who pays Jordan wages? Sussex! So why is he playing in the IPL rather than for Sussex? He only gets paid by Sussex when he's playing for Sussex or injured. Sussex will get 10% of his IPL wages.

Who pays Jordan wages? Sussex! So why is he playing in the IPL rather than for Sussex? Well, they presumably won't pay him whilst he's deliberately absenting himself from Sussex? There is no point looking at this situation with a mindset based on 1950s style county loyalties. It doesn't work like that any more, whether we like it or not. These days, do any top players allow themselves to become totally dependent on their county employment?

They do Joe, and it stinks that the ECB can actively encourage players not under contract to them, to enlist in these competitions. I can understand Jordan, who probably wants to be part of the England T20 set up, following their advice, but Sussex should have seen it coming. It's a ludicrous situation, that a county aspiring to return to the top flight, has the four seamers who were on duty against Essex, and Hatchett and Whittingham, as back up. I did try to tell you, but I kept getting back "ECB have cleared Jordan to play county cricket from 1 May". Large squads are inevitable and if they cannot be sustained then that limits the competitive prospects for the club. Sussex probably not just "phlegmatic" but delighted (off the record). I think the rules are that the county gets a per centage of a contracted player's IPL earnings. Far more important to "sweat the assets" by leasing CJ out to a rich franchise than to ask him to contribute to the push for promotion in a competition that Jim May infamously complained on this very site "costs the most amount of money for the least reward".

If Jordan is required by Royal Challengers Bangalore he will stay in India until at least 22nd May, and possibly until 29th May if they reach the final. That rules him out of the next 4 championship matches and at least the first T20. If the ECB don't play silly buggers and require him to stay with the Test squad v Sri Lanka for some buddy bonding, we might be lucky enough to have him play in the first 5 T20s and and 4 50 over games during June before he goes off to the One day International squad, taking him out of the side from 21 June to 5 July.
Assuming he doesn't break his neck playing touch rugby in a warm-up session, and again assuming that they don't recall him for the Tests, he could be available for the CC game against Kent starting 17 July, against Essex on 4 August, and finally at Hove against Gloucestershire on 13 August. Then we assume he will be called back into the England fold for limited overs games against Pakistan starting 24 August and running up to 7 September. When that lot is over there are 2 CC games left, against Worcester at Hove and finally Gloucester at Bristol.
The July intermission could allow him to play in the last few T20s before the finals stage, and even the finals itself if we reach them. In fact he should be available for the majority of the 50 over games.
Conclusion: we need to recruit a spearhead bowler to compete effectively in the county championship this season., as Jordan's appearances can be regarded only as a potential bonus, and not as a given staple.

I was spouting forth in the pub at the weekend that the return of Wright and Jordan will make Sussex a much stronger team than the one that has barely matched its two Division 2 opponents so far. I'm just waiting to hear that Luke Wright is out for four more weeks later today.

Have we signed anyone yet? What's done, is done. Yes it was incredibly naive of Sussex to think they could get by without replacing Hobden and Anyon, and this Jordan situation was always on the cards, but it's how the club acts now that matters. We should scour the Kolpak options and get someone in for at least the rest of the season. We need to act as promptly as Hampshire did, when they lost Fidel Edwards, within a week, they'd signed Tino Best

Hhs,
BBC Radio's Adrian Harms agrees with you. He tweeted last night: "With an ODI series in June it could be mid July before @sussexccc have Chris Jordan available for Championship cricket @bbcsussexsport"
Are we surprised about Jordan? After his success for England in the World Cup T20, it was on the cards we would rarely see him this season. If successful in the IPL, then no doubt next year a similar fate will befall Sussex. The club cannot rely on his appearance and why we need a replacement. Unfortunately, Sussex don't have the money.
As this season unfolds immediate promotion looks less likely. Let us hope Wright quickly recovers, remains injury-free, and fires on all cylinders for the rest of the summer.
Jb,
Perhaps, we should trawl the ranks of 'Lashings XI' as Hampshire did?

Can we really believe that the club don't have the money for a replacement? Since the playing budget was set, bearing in mind we're already operating with a significantly reduced squad, we've lost the salaries of Hobden, Anyon and now Jordan, for all bar a few games. No, even before the Jordan debacle, there must have been the money to strengthen the group, now it's a necessity

Tino Best is an asset only to the broadcasters and the entertainments industry.

He specifically abjured the IPL when he took on the captaincy (maybe the latter was an inducement to him) and has shown no interest in the CPL.
