Pre-season games may not give too many indicators for the forthcoming season, but certainly a washed out game tells us nothing. After the rain wiped out the home friendly against Hampshire, the players will be keen to get some action when Loughborough MCCU come to Hove for a 3 day match. Jason Gillespie in his interview remarked about the enthusiasm and fitness levels of the squad and it will be good to see Sussex perform well with bat and bowl. It would be good if the successes are shared around the squad and that some of the fringe players get some runs or wickets.
The weather forecast does not look good, but no one believes the weather forecast. A gentleman at the abandoned game on Thursday told me at 12 noon that there would be no play even though it was dry at the time. He predicted rain from 1pm. At 12.59, it started to rain again. I didn't ask him how he thought Sussex would fare this, but if his cricket knowledge is as good as his weather forecasting, I will risk a shilling or two on his prediction.
The last time that Loughborough MCCU came to Hove was four years ago on the same dates as this fixture. In that game, Sussex piled on 423 for 9 declared with centuries for Ed Joyce and Matt Machan. Loughborough MCCU replied with 93, but their second top scorer was Michael Burgess with 26; James Anyon took 5 for 14. Sussex opted to bat again and scored 234 for 8 with Steffan Piolet becoming the top scorer with 103 not out. Loughborough managed to hold on for the draw as Lewis Hatchett claimed his second haul of four wickets in the match and Michael Burgess scored 49 for Loughborough MCCU before being run out.
Fingers crossed for some decentish weather.

I think you will find that on Thursday there was a heavy shower early morning that put paid to any play before lunch. Andy Mc has never seen the ground so wet at this time of year. Rain plus the cold means no drying. As to 'no one believes the weather forecast'..I beg to differ. Forecasts are very accurate these days I should know as tralling to Hove a fair distance decisions need to be made ! If there has been any rain today I fear for tomorrow althouh forecast to be dry. Plus lack of sun will mean no real drying. Monday looks very wet and Tuesday marginally better. Dizzy will no doubt appreciate Sussex's mild climate !!

I have been up to the ground. The entire square and run-ups are all covered. Obviously the outfield looks soft but there is no standing water or anything and I presume they've worked with the blotter.
So unless there is some kind of 'hidden' problem I can't see why they shouldn't start at 11am tomorrow.

Think I am right in saying these games have first class status which is a farce. So many ordinary players have acceptable averages because of not out 100s and fifers against very poor university sides. Can also include touring sides trating as match practice.

Ah, that old April chestnut. A complex subject (what about the standard of first-class domestic matches in Ireland or Zimbabwe, or Test players filling their boots when Bangladesh and latterly Zimbabwe have been very moderate?), but I would much rather the games have first-class status as it sets the tone for the match to be played properly with a competitive environment. I believe Loughborough outscored every side they played on first innings in their 3 county matches last year. What is a bit more tricky is Oxford and Cambridge, who on recent evidence are miles behind. I believe there is a suggestion that there maybe be some combined MCCU teams to play counties somewhere down the line. Far more importantly, it is dry and clear here, so let's get the season started!

A good recovery and a fine captains innings from Brown ably assisted by Beer with his first 1st class 50.

Good to see Will Beer playing instead of Briggs, perhaps at long last, he will be given a chance with the red ball, plus he is useful with the bat.
We all know that Gillespie is a great fan of leggies

Day two of the game called off before lunch. Hopefully, the rain will pass.
