Sussex are back on the road as they play their second County Championship match in a run of 5 games starting on consecutive Fridays. The team head back to The Midlands to face a Leicestershire team that will be playing its first competitive game of the season assuming you exclude first class games against Universities.
Leicestershire have finished bottom of Division Two for four of the last 5 seasons and haven’t been close to promotion since being relegated in 2007. On paper, it looks like a winnable game, but as Jimmy Greaves used to say: “It’s a funny ol’ game”.
In the last 5 CC encounters with Leicestershire, Sussex have won four and drawn one of the games. The last encounter was at Arundel last season where Sussex turned round a small first innings deficit by scoring 443 for 6 declared in the second innings. Stiaan van Zyl led the assault with 166 not out and Jofra Archer scored an exciting 42 off 14 balls to give Sussex a lead that Leicestershire never came close to reaching.
In the home match last year, Sussex faced a first innings deficit of 56, but came back on this occasion as well to win. It was Jofra Archer’s second innings bowling performance of 6 for 70 that gave Sussex a winnable target which was reached with 5 wickets to spare, largely thanks to Luke Wells scoring 90 not out.
In the 2016 season, we won by an innings and 57 runs at Leicester, partly due to Steve Magoffin’s haul of 5 wickets in the first innings. The return fixture ended in a tame draw.
Before that, our previous CC encounter was in 2010. In that game, Lewis Hatchett took 5 wickets and Corey Collymore took 6 wickets in an innings and 19 runs win. Chris Nash starred with the bat in an innings of 184.
It seems unlikely that there will be any or many changes to the team that took 12 points at Edgbaston. A first win of the season? We will see.
