After a visit from our neighbours to the right (as you look at a map, anyhow), we next have a visit from our neighbours to the left. Few Sussex supporters could have complained about the way Sussex swept Kent aside with a 7 wicket win to kick off the 2018 Royal London One Day Cup campaign. It’s likely though that Hampshire will offer a tougher test, although it will be Hampshire’s first game in the competition.
Last season, Sussex recorded three wins from six completed games; the previous just one win from eight. One of the two incomplete games last season was against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl where water seeped under the covers and caused the game to be abandoned. Sussex have nonetheless a poor recent one-day record against Hampshire.
The last contested fixture was at Hove in 2016 when Sussex lost by 9 runs. Chasing 268, good efforts from Wright, Brown and top-scoring Nash were not quite enough in an exciting finish. On that day, George Garton had been the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 40 from his 10 overs.
Hampshire have had a mixed start to the County Championship season although James Vince and Hamish Amla have started the season well. Sam Northeast, who moved from our right to our left (remember the map), is out injured having fractured a finger in a practice session.
A second win will even have the doubters wondering if we can progress further in this tournament. I think it will be tough, but we will see.

Sussex have named the same squad.
Garton and Wiese were expensive against Kent but, according to Dizzy in the post match interview, the pitch didn’t play the way they expected it to, was slow and low and more suited to pace off. Perhaps Rawlins will get an outing in place of Garton although he hasn’t put in any performances with the 2’s thus far, otherwise I’d expect the same team.
The weather is set fair for tomorrow.

An inspired choice Sharkey. Why are we not playing Salt in this team? Also, If we're taking this comp seriously and not using it as a breeding ground why are we not playing Van Zyl? And before anybody simple or childlike in the brain comes marching along to point out my hypocrisy, I mean where is the consistency and logic? Sod seconds form, Rawlins, Jenner, Beer, Salt, Whittingham, Garton and maybe one more should all be featuring in this side. Hopefully, when we're halfway through the comp and limping about on about 5 points like every season they will. Again, for the simple people, I know that Garton and Rawlins are in the squad, and Garton's even played a game - An England Lions bowler can actually get a game at Sussex, it's amazing.

The general view amongst Members is that 250 runs won't be enough. "They are 50 short," says one. It was a good effort to reach this score by the tail-enders with Wiese whacking 29 off 20 balls, but the outstanding feature of the innings apart from Finch's century was the Hampshire fielding. Quite outstanding apart from a bit of slapstick at the end when Robinson was dropped and the ball fell out of the fielder's hands for a 6. Hants fielding included two spectacular run-outs; their usual slick out-fielding; and only giving away 5 extras. Yep, just 5 extras and these were wides including one four. The number that Sussex of old would have given away in one over.
Can the Sussex bowlers do a Kent and bowl Hampshire out for under 200? We must wait and see.

Another 30 or 40 would have made it a more challenging target (obviously). Still, I know I would be thinking that if we had scored another 30 or 40 that another 30 or 40 would have been desirable. Let's hope our bowlers can get amongst the wickets early on.

van Zyl and Beer are injured. Oh dear Liquidskin, Van Zyl is injured, slating the club’s “logic” and he’s injured.
