As we bounce between 4-day Championship cricket and the cut and thrust of a T20 Quarter Final, Sussex head to Lord’s for a 4-day game against Middlesex. It’s the start of a run of five CC games that will end in less than a month, which will ultimately decide whether Sussex play in Division One or Division Two next season.
Middlesex were widely tipped to return to Division One after being relegated last season. They started the County Championship season with mixed fortunes, but they have come back with two narrow wins over Northamptonshire and Warwickshire in their last two games. They currently stand in fifth place, but would need an outstanding end to the season to close the 39-point gap for a promotion place.
Middlesex have only collected 8 batting points all season which is reflected in their batting averages. Nick Gubbins averages 46 with Eskinazi and Malan the only recognised batsmen averaging over 30. Over half of the wickets taken by Middlesex this season have been victims of Tim Murtagh or James Harris. Murtagh, though, is missing from the Middlesex squad for this game.
In the game between Sussex and Middlesex at Hove earlier in the season, Sussex got over the line with three wickets to spare. A gutsy 65 not out from Ben Brown in the second innings saw Sussex recover from 128 for 6 to reach the target of 232.
Sussex have recorded four back to back wins in both the County Championship and the T20 Blast. Can it become five in a row at Lord’s? We will see.

Phil Salt Luke Wells Tom Haines Harry Finch Ben Brown Delray Rawlins Jofra Archer David Wiese Chris Jordan Ollie Robinson Danny Briggs Assume that Burgess is not fit? Burgess playing for the 2nd XI today, scored 131 in the first innings. Wright has replaced him and I’m pretty sure he’ll play ahead of Rawlins.

Salt Wells Haines Finch Wright Brown Archer Jordan Robinson Briggs Beer Surprised that Burgess should have been completely dropped, though his form has tailed off recently, I think the club should have faith in him. And Wright has done very little to inspire confidence in his strengths as an anchor of the batting this year.
Beer for Wiese? Surely not.

Wright in for Burgess.
Toss uncontested and 4 down at lunch, good start.

Middlesex have been dismissed for 169 at tea. A very satisfactory effort by the four seamers. Let's hope the batting goes as well.

Right team for me, based on form and without certain views on youth and Kolpaks. We're motoring right now and with Wright back at 5 this team looks really strong. We're certainly giving our young batters a good chance and they have excelled really. Shame we're not doing the same with one or two of our quicks but it's at least understandable right now. Couldn't drop any really.
Motoring man.

We're struggling. This could be a short match.

39 extras including 10 no balls is just not good enough, Middlesex shouldn’t have got anywhere near that total.
Sussex 120/6 as bad light stops play.

joe,
Talking about the heinous number of extras that Sussex give away and have been giving away for a fair number of seasons is the 'elephant in the room' at the Club. If you dare raise the subject you are derided by the Coach as being 'negative' and laughed at by a certain Sussex Captain. The coaching staff seem unconcerned by the matter and appear to be doing nothing to rectify it. But, then do they care when the Club are on a winning streak and find themselves in a strong position to gain promotion and achieve a T20 trophy this season.
The tragedy is that this 'elephant in the room' may come back to bite them on the bum when a critical and close match is won by the opposition thanks to the high number of extras given away by Sussex. God forbid, that moment will be against Warwickshire next month.

I watched whole day and whilst 10 no balls not good enough little could be done about the leg byes and but for Brown would have been a lot more. Have never seen ball beat bat so often and at times Archer was near unplayable in the morning session. Robinson was good throughout and Jordon very good in afternoon. Any other day they would have been out for under 100. Complete contrast to Sussex innings when I think only one ball passed bat in first 10 overs. I didnt think Wells and Salt were reckless just hit numerous half volleys for four. Both out to first mistake made. It was from there it went wrong. Bowling was not great and with 2 wickets down Haines and Finch should have been thinking of close of play 20 plus overs away. Thought both played too loosely but thats inexperience for you. Absolutely no comparison to how the 2 sides bowled and sitting here this morning still finding it hard to believe we are 6 down.

Middlesex got 25 more than they should have got due to extras.
