The results since the beginning of May have been poor. A list of all the results in this period does not make for good reading. Here they are - L L L D D W D D L L L L. If a change of tournament is the magic solution, the T20 Blast might make all the difference as the Sussex team heads along the coast to the Ageas Bowl to face Hampshire.
I fail to understand why two more evening games can’t be scheduled in to the T20 Blast programme without asking too much of the players so that it would make a complete round robin. I also don’t understand why the random fixture generator has decided that Sussex face Hampshire away and at home within 5 days, but who am I to question such fine points?
Last season Sussex were runners-up to Worcestershire in the T20 Blast. In the group stages, Sussex were third in a closely-fought group with Hampshire finishing next to bottom having won 2 and lost 9 games. While the match at Hove last year against Hampshire was washed out, the game at the Ageas Bowl produced a convincing 8 wicket win for Sussex. Chasing 158, Luke Wright and Laurie Evans both scored fifties to win with 10 balls to spare. Earlier in the game, Danny Briggs and Jofra Archer both grabbed three wickets.
Maybe, it’s being over-optimistic to think that fortunes will change for Sussex in this competition, but a winning start would cheer a few of the faithful at Hove. With Rashid Khan back for the first ten gamesand Alex Carey bolstering the batting, Sussex will be looking for some success in this competition. Will Sussex will be heading back along the A27 with two points? We will see.
