The will he-won't he Tredwell saga not over yet. He gave an interview to Matt Cole of BBC Radio Kent yesterday, in which he made it clear that he is still considering his options and that there are various factors in play:

I hope something can be worked out as I think he'd be a useful addition. It says in the Argus that Sussex have only six players out of contract this winter, and most of them, I presume, we'd like to keep, so it will be tough for Robbo to find room in the budget, especially as a seamer comes first

I think it's a bit early for contract news. IIRC, Sussex usually wait until the season has finished. Yes indeed, it isn't on the agenda. Its the clubs that have had the big failings this season, the relegated sides and those just missing out on the big prizes that are announcing all their changes and having clear-outs. I could be tempted to act as Devil's Advocate though, and ask, why not let Beer and Wells go? Why not accept that Beer, for all of his limited, minor success in T20 hasn't broken through into Championship cricket, and clearly isn't going to persuade the current coach to pick him at this stage. Why not release him and look for someone else who could be expected to build a place in all three formats;perhaps Azeem Rafiq, a Yorkshire T20 specialist and one who was a Championship regular until he lost his bowling might rebuild his action and his appetite for the game with a move to Sussex? And what of Wells? A golden boy for 4 years or so, without really moving on from that promising status of 800/900 runs at around 30. Perhaps he's unhappy at not getting a long go at the limited-overs game, but many might feel that he's had too long a go at the red ball game without convincingly making the case for himself as a dominating player, capable of deciding a game either by attacking or by accumulating staunchly while others build up the really big scores. Is there a case for giving Machan a new chance at the head of the order, now that Cachopa has laid his claim to 4, and letting him go elsewhere to pursue his dreams? According to The Argus this morning, Wells isn't out of contract.

The only source that Wells was out of contract and looking for a county that would guarantee him a T20 place was Dobell at the start of this season. So has he signed a new contract or was it a bad case of misinformation from cricinfo?
Because jonboy is right that he is not on the official list of out of contract players, which is: Magoffin, Beer, Brown, Piolet, Jackson, Lewis.

Good news about Wells and Hatchett although it clearly shows all contract extensions aren't formally announced by the club (or the media for that matter).

The gossip at Canterbury today apparently says the odds have swung back on Tredwell joining Sussex after he refused media invitations to confirm that he will definitely be a Kent player next season. He's reportedly hurt by the turn events have taken as he's been relegated from last season's captain to this season's reserve; but he would still prefer to stay if certain "assurances" about first-team selection (which England are encouraging him to seek) can be met. At least, thats the gossip.
You would guess such "assurances" are unlikely to be forthcoming. But in the event of an irretrievable breakdown between Tredwell and his employer, the sticking point could be that Kent may demand that Sussex buy out the remaining year of his contract (apparently something similar happened when Wheater left Essex for Hants?) One cannot imagine there is a contingency in the Sussex budget to cover something like that.
So who knows where this saga goes next? Perhaps this board's spy in the away dressing room, Sheffield Park, may be able to cast some light...

It seems this is the end of the Tredwell-Sussex romance, as reported in this thread unofficialsussexccc.freeforums.net/post/5649Good luck to Treddders both for England and in his efforts to re-establish himself in County cricket next year. He gave Sussex great stability and control in all his games with us as bowler, batsman and slip fielder. Moreover at Horsham he tantalisingly gave us a glimpse of how very good an attacking spin bowler he has been in the past. Let us all hope for the sake of cricket that he can return to that standard permanently.

Yes, it was quite easy to see the qualities that Robbo admired. He would have been a useful addition for us, but it wasn't to be, so we move on. Will a Kent now operate with two off spinners?

Yes. I wish him well. Is there any chance that he might still be available on loan at any time in 2015?

That's a shame. I really like Tredwell, he's an excellent all round cricketer who seems to really enjoy the game. Good luck to him.

Has signed an extended deal, period unspecified. www.yourcanterbury.co.uk/sport/tredwell_happy_to_stay_at_kent_1_3845738You can see why Kent were desperate to keep him for the white ball formats, but it doesn't change the fact that there will still be no place in Kent's LVCC side for both Riley and Tredwell, at least until the latter stages when pitches may favour two specialist spinners - so one of them will be available for LVCC loan because neither can spend April-July rotting in second XI cricket. But Sussex will surely favour a more settled approach to the spinning conundrum, hence Azeem Rafiq's presence in the indoor nets at Hove this week?

Yes, finished at Loughborough but they released him last season whenever Kent wanted him, anyway.

Yep, The BBC website confirms the story, so farewell 'Tricky Tredders' and your growing of organic vegetables. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/30034962Meanwhile, all eyes are on Azeem Rafiq. Another "will he won't he" story as Steve Hollis says he's trialling with several counties over the Winter. Steve has written a piece on how Sussex are seeking a new spinner in the 'Argus' today. How many rejections can Will Beer take before his agent finally thrusts him off to a Division 2 county? The cynic might suggest no-one wants him still, and Will is better off improving his all-round game at Hove until someone actually does. Some believe his winning 'Team Man of the Year' at 'The Players Awards' in September was more a put down than praise of his loyalty. In today's anti-leggie-spin world, Will is better off honing his batting skills. As for Zaidi..? www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/28819635www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/player/354259.html

A Kent source now claiming it was a "lie" that Tredwell even discussed his early release from Kent. Some flagrant rewriting of history going on there, given that when asked in September to confirm that he would be at Kent next season he could not do so and said he had some "big decisions" to make over the coming weeks... In the end perhaps Sussex's budget couldn't stretch that far, as it is only ten weeks since The Guardian confidently reported that "It is only a matter of time before Tredwell confirms a permanent move to Sussex next season." www.theguardian.com/sport/2014/aug/29/kent-gloucestershire-royal-london-cup-match-reportBut we move on and leave the Kent spinners of a different kind to their dreams of returning to the first division. I'd suggest that the loan option, whether Tredwell or Riley, doesn't work for Sussex and was only used last year as an emergency move when it became impossible to justify keeping Zaidi in the side any longer. Rafiq looks an interesting option. I agree with hhsussex that he was poor at Arundel for Yorks in the Sussex first innings last season. I didn't see his second innings bowling but note that he got through 31 overs and only conceded 79 runs. And if anyone can put him back on the right track, it is Robinson.
