With Boris's announcement that there is to be no crowds at sporting events until 1st October I would now abandon the county cricket season and put all staff across all sixteen counties back on furlough from 22nd July until 31st October.

Maybe all Cricket clubs should adopt the Cummings approach, and instead of listening to the government make up their own rules - with socially distanced crowds watching the T20. Will the government really try to close them down, arrest players and spectators? Can't see it...

This was always on the cards. That's why I've been advocating a 50 over comp followed by the T20 Blast. That way, they can maximise TV income. CC cricket behind closed doors is just a waste of money.

At the upcoming friendly between Surrey and Middlesex at The Oval the ECB will trial spectators at the ground, members only and in a specific part of the ground well away from the player dressing rooms etc.

It wasn't always on the cards. Counties were led to believe by the DCMS that crowds in some capacity at least would be allowed from the last week of August. With no spectators until October playing any cricket is just going to cost money. With the fixtures not being announced next Friday they could just furlough everyone from 22nd July (earliest they can put everyone back on furlough) until 31st October.

Going through the Country’s biggest challenges since the Second World War I don’t suppose cricket was high on the governments list of priorities Coverpoint!
As I said in my earlier post there will be a trial with spectators next week, this will be the first time ANY spectators have been at a professional sporting event of any kind since the lockdown.

To those who voted for Johnson, all I can say is: "You won. Get over it"

To those who voted for Johnson, all I can say is: "You won. Get over it" Corbyn or Johnson wasn't exactly much of a choice. Both are useless. New Zealand have shown what can be achieved through proper leadership and are now returning to normal. We have to get the economy back up and running soon or we won't have an economy to go back to. It's alright scientists like Vallance and Witty in a safe six figure tax payer funded jobs for life saying its not safe to return to work but the reality is without opening up the economy at least 3 in 10 people will be unemployed. The economic toll of the virus will be far greater and longer lasting than the deaths. Waiting for a vaccine isn't an answer as there is no guarantee a vaccine will be found.

When I say "it was always on the cards", I mean that spectators at cricket this summer has always been highly unlikely. I grant you that this government's announcements are often confusing, contradictory, and prone to U-turns. With no spectators until October playing any cricket is just going to cost money. Don't you think that televised white ball cricket could be profitable without a live audience? The ECB has always planned to play the T20, even behind closed doors. With the fixtures not being announced next Friday they could just furlough everyone from 22nd July (earliest they can put everyone back on furlough) until 31st October. I've forgotten when they said they'd release the fixtures for August and September. Was it meant to be last week? Maybe some counties are having second thoughts about the wisdom of playing red ball cricket in a couple of weeks' time?

We've become a political laughing stock. I guess the problem stems from the fact that the Tories chose Johnson as their leader - for the wrong reason, IMO.

Financially can counties play T20 and make a profit with no spectators and the cost of PPE? I don't think so. I think financially the best decision would be to just call off the season completely and put them all back on furlough. I know York (19th - 23rd August) and Doncaster (12th September) will be extremely disappointed with this decision. Football clubs were expecting a resumption to coincide with the Premiership restarting on 12th September. Meanwhile it is ok to have 25,000 people on Camber Sands with no social distancing whatsoever.
