At least I didn't goatmouth Magoffin. A brilliant 50 - his highest championship score. Now we need a fifer from him. hhs: Blame that partnership error on the radio commentator. Not Adrian Harms but the other guy. As you say, my goatmouth was false. Pheww! edit: I'll shut up now - Mags goes. edit: 368 all out. Given it was 172-6, surely, we take that. Let's see how Mags and co bowl. A very difficult 20 minutes coming up for Northants.

Great partnership. Well batted to both Zaidi and Magoffin.

Warwickshire game delayed by rain. They have 3 points to date but the same commentator who got the partnership record wrong said Sussex can't come second now? Is this correct?

Warwickshire game delayed by rain. They have 3 points to date but the same commentator who got the partnership record wrong said Sussex can't come second now? Is this correct? According to cricinfo Warwicks have now got 217 points and Sussex 202. If the Warwicks game was rained off at this minute and didn't resume they would get 5 pts for the draw, bringing them to 222. If Sussex got 3 bowling points plus 16 for the win we would end up with 221. What we need is for Durham to beat Warwicks and for Warwicks to get no more than 4 batting points - all presuming we win with 3 bowling points.

Thanks for that.
edit: A brilliant start but are we surprised? Northants 17-2. 69 wickets now for Magoffin this season. A fifer in this final match almost a certainty.
Come on Durham!

Magoffin's combined first-class figures against Northants this season, so far: 32 overs 11 maidens 41 runs 10 wickets What terrifying figures! He is indeed Northant's nemesis. And we thought we had players who haunt us. And just to rub it in he scores a half century!

Not looking so good now. Although, one senses, if one wicket occurs others may quickly follow. Just 80 required by Northants now to avoid the follow-on. Problem being, apart from Mags where are the other wickets coming from as the pitch eases and the ball softens?

Problem being, apart from Mags where are the other wickets coming from as the pitch eases and the ball softens? I think the chances of 2nd place have just about disappeared now: Warwickshire will almost certainly not be beaten by Durham, barring a Headingley 81 scenario, and they will probably get the extra batting points they need to surpass the maximum Sussex can get. Providing we do no worse than draw with Northants we should get 3rd ahead of Somerset, which is a great achievement when you think of how dejected the side was in the aftermath of the Vincent/Naved Arif revelations, and how badly they played for the next couple of games. If the weather holds this game, too, should be won, and seven championship wins would be the best First Division haul since we last got that number, in 2007, when we won the Championship. Something to savour in the long winter nights when we chase after disaffected spinners and seam bowlers. Elsewhere Lancashire look to be losing their fight against Middlesex, despite the enterprise in Lancashire recruiting T.E. Bailey as first-change bowler. He took 2-36 in the first innings, which is not bad for a chap of 90 who died a couple of years ago.

Why do Northants have twelve players? Special dispensation from the ECB to even things up?

This pitch looks to have flattened out and despite northants batting being very poor the weakness of Sussexs bowling is being fully exposed.
Nash doesn't look like getting wickets and Liddle never does. Hatchett is taking wickets at over 40 a piece and isn't economical either.
Next season I think we will have to stick with mr Zed but we need two more seamers to replace Jordan and Lewis...if Hobden and anyon don't get fit and Liddle doesn't find some form we may need five new seamers.

Liddle gets the nod, which is surprising...It may be a generous gesture from Robinson to show solidarity with Liddle who has been under fire for his below OD performances this season. Giving him a place in the last match of the season and against the weakest batting team in division 1 could do his confidence a world of good. An opportunity to get a fifer, for example. Robbo is loyal to his players and supports them when things are not going well. One can understand his reasoning. Either that or Liddle has turned a corner in the 2nds like Zaidi. In the seconds red ball cricket Zaidi got 17 wickets at 28....Hobden has 20 at 20, Liddle has nine at 56 for the season. He needs to get a run in the third eleven and turn a lot more corners. cricketarchive.com/Archive/Events/21/Second_Eleven_Championship_2014/Sussex_Second_XI_Bowling.htmlshame we couldn't give a chance to Fynn HP or hairy finch? Even Piolet or beer.

An absorbing days cricket with credit going to Northants. They've had so many innings defeats, they must have feared the worse. As others have said, this Sussex attack, Magoffin apart, offers very little threat indeed. There can be no room for sentiment I'm afraid, the likes of Liddle, Lewis and Anyon are all past their best and are highly likely be any better next season. Well, not in division one anyway. It's obvious Maggs needs some assistance, and with Jordan likely to be away even more next season, we are desperate for a top quality seamer

In effect 147-1 so all going according to plan. Big concern, apart from Mags, who's going to take the Northants 2nd innings wickets?
