In less than a week, we take to the field for our first friendly against Surrey. Yes, these games often turn into farces with batsmen batting twice and 16 wickets falling in one innings, but it's only a couple weeks before we face Lancashire in the County Championship.
So, what are your expectations for the 2021 season? How will we perform in the County Championship, The One Day Cup and the T20 Blast? And, who do you expect to rise up the ranks?
Let's have your thoughts below...

In and around the bottom of the pile in the championship. A 12 point penalty shouldn’t be difficult to overcome, but our squad lacks depth, especially in the batting. Am I right in thinking that Head won’t arrive until late April, so may miss the first three or four games? If so, are we going to sign a replacement, as other counties have, to cover for their late arrivals? The 50 over competition? We will be decimated by the 100, so more failure here I fear. It’s the 20-20 where I feel we will have the best chance of success

I agree with the lack of depth in the CC squad, a couple of injuries and we’d be in trouble. How much we see of Ollie Robinson will also be a factor as without him we’ll struggle to bowl a side out twice.
I definitely see this season as one of rebuilding. There are a lot of promising youngsters coming through, I just hope they’re not all thrown in together. There has to be a balance of youth and experience and by experience I don’t mean players like Salt, Rawlins and Garton who are progressing well but yet to hit their straps.. Ian Salisbury is saying all the right things but the proof of the pudding etc etc. My expectations are low for the CC so I’d like to be pleasantly surprised.
The 50 over comp will be an opportunity to see more youngsters given a go. It’ll be more of a 2nd XI comp than first class.
T20 is where we have the best chance to progress, anything less than a quarter final spot will be a huge failure.

I agree with previous posters, T20 is our only hope of a Trophy this season, just like previous years. I have a good feeling about James Kirtley as the new coach. Perhaps, wishful thinking. Meanwhile, Will Travis Head, van Zyl and Weiss actually appear at Hove? No doubt some new Mozambique Covid variant will manifest, and what of young Jof? A prolonged elbow injury, maybe the ECB will want him to prove he is injury-free before rejoining the England squad, and a few games for Sussex might materialise. More wishful-thinking, perhaps?

It's hard to see where the runs will come from in the County Championship. Even if we bowl sides our for modest scores, I fear the batting will let us down in too many games. Whether Head can salvage things with three or four games gone, I don't know.
In the One Day Cup, I don't give us a cat in hell's chance as The Hundred runs alongside it.
The T20 Blast is our best hope, but we haven't really found a replacement for Laurie Evans at number 3. Unless someone like Rawlins steps up, too much will depend on Wright and Salt to score 60+ between them. T20 games can hinge on a bit of luck so I fancy us to just about qualify or just fail to qualify for the knock-out phase. What happens then depends on getting the breaks at the right time.
My real hope is that someone comes through in the CC side as that could start to make a difference for future years.

We are desperately weak in the batting department, from Salisbury's interview it looks unlikely we'll see Bopara in the red ball, which is very disappointing as experience is needed in the middle order - think this is what will be put out in the first CC game
Salt Haines Van Zyl Clark Rawlins Brown Thomason Garton Robinson Carson Claydon

A small squad laced with 'specialist' players we can't even pick. Head isn't even a squad member according to the website, but Wiese is. Really poor Championship side made even worse if the fat old Aussie cheat is included - criminal he's still with us. I'm unfortunately losing interest with Sussex in the CC, we've been in a disastrous direction for years - it's depressing. Too many youngsters thrust in without earning merit in the seconds.
I'm out of touch with the CC - are there no divisions this year?
It's all about T20 for SCC, unfortunately.

Even without the 100 nonsense, half our squad.don’t play in all formats, or are off globetrotting That’s far too limiting

As far as I can see we have 16 players to pick a CC team from for the first game.
Brown Beer Atkins Carson Clark Claydon Crocombe Garton Haines Hunt Meaker Rawlins Robinson Salt Thomason van Zyl.
My best guess would be
Salt Haines van Zyl Clark Rawlins Brown Thomason Garton Robinson Meaker Crocombe
Batting looks flimsy but there literally isn’t anyone else till (if) Head arrives.

Carson maybe, no cheats.
It's a shocking squad really, even after Head turns up. Just on numbers, it's shocking. As things stand we have no room at all for injuries to batsmen. What do we do if we lose just one batsmen in the first few weeks? It's crazy. I actually hope it happens so these jokers in charge face a harsh reality.
Unacceptable. As is keeping an old has-been from Australia who is a blatant cheat.
