After a miserable run of results in the County Championship in September, attention turns, with greater optimism, to the T20 Blast Finals Day at Edgbaston. Few of those that played in the recent County Championship defeats will be appearing at Edgbaston.
It feels to me, at least, that Sussex CCC are two teams - the CC/RLODC side and the T20 Blast side. Assuming they are selected, it will be last game or games that Phil Salt and Chris Jordan play for Sussex before they depart to Lancashire and Surrey respectively.
Sussex will have to wait until the afternoon to know whether they will have a chance of competing for a trophy in the evening. Their Semi Final opponents are Kent, who won the Southern Group with two more points than Sussex. Indeed, they looked set to qualify comfortably, although two heavy defeats to Somerset and Gloucestershire reduced their winning margin. Sussex had to rely on a win in their final game against Kent to ensure qualification, although Sussex had a more difficult time qualifying as five of their games were abandoned.
When it comes to runs, Kent tend to share the load, although Jordan Cox, Daniel Bell-Drummond and Ollie Robinson have all contributed well, scoring at a decent rate. Again with the bowling, Kent have shared wickets around, although Matthew Milnes has stood out taking 18 wickets albeit at over 8 per over.
If Sussex win this game, they play the winners of the morning game between Hampshire and Somerset. Indeed, in the four North v South Quarter Final ties, all four were won by the Southern Group teams.
It's been a disjointed competition this year with the Quarter Finals being played over a month after the group stages and, in Sussex's case, the finals coming almost a month after the Quarter Final. If you support Southern Brave, this may not concern you too much. If you don't support Southern Brave or you think 'Southern What?', you may have more to say.
T20, by its very nature, is a mixture of skill and luck on the day. Sussex stand a chance of winning, but so do the other three teams. What's your thoughts?
