I think Beer would have most to gain from leaving. It's a bit of a mystery to me why he has had such little first class cricket for us. There seems to be a bit of a dearth of spin bowling around the counties in general so he could find the right club to give him the backing we don't seem to want to give him. I doubt Piolet had many other offers on the table when he joined and I'm not sure Hatchett is yet attractive enough an option for other counties.

Im sure Piolet could get a one day contract at most counties, he's got a superb record in T20 and is a useful 40 over/50 over player. His problem is that he isn't quite quick enough to take first class wickets and isn't quite good enough to bat in the top six. I do think there is still potential for him to become a useful number 7/8 in FC for us

Does anyone remember Paul Phillipson? Sterling qualities, ideally suited for tournaments of the kind we don't have these days.

Wally - Surely Kent would have been paying Tredwell's salary as he was his ultimate employer.
Allenby is a good signing for Somerset as he will add some much needed experience to their batting line up. He is a bit similar to Trego but I don't see that as a problem. For Allenby it is a good move for three reasons 1) It is close enough that he doesn't have to move; 2)They are in the first division and 3) With Matt Maynard there he knews the coach and so shouldn't have too much trouble fitting in. What is the value of a contract nowadays as Compton has left one year into a three year contract and Allenby one year into a four year contract?
Beer, Hatchett and Piolet futures would be best served by remaining at Sussex. As for Wells I thought his comments were refreshingly honest.

Wally - Surely Kent would have been paying Tredwell's salary as he was his ultimate employer. Not so. It's all set out in the ECB regulations covering loans. The county loaning the player continues to pay the pension contribution but the county borrowing the player pays the salary and NI costs for the loan period. See 12.8 of the regulations governing the qualification and registration of cricketers here: www.thepca.co.uk/assets/files/pdfs/2013%20DOMESTIC_RegsGovQualification_2013_p145-186_LR.pdfIn Tredwell's case, it was slightly more complicated as he was playing white ball cricket for Kent and red ball cricket for Sussex simultaneously, so a per centage deal was struck between the two counties on his salary and related employment costs.

According to the BBC, Messrs Piolet, Beer and Jackson have signed new one year contracts. This presumably leaves Lewis Hatchett deciding what is best for him. It wouldn't surprise me if he seeks pastures new.

I agree, philh, I think he'll have a better chance of playing regularly and therefore finding out just how good he might be at another county, possibly a Second division side. Glamorgan might be a possibility.

Hatchett certainly has a tough decision to make.
On the one hand, Robinson says the plan is to play four seamers in the LVCC, which offers him a sliver of hope : if Magoffin, Jordan, Mills and Shahzad are the first choice quartet, does he stay and compete with Anyon and Hobden for first reserve if and when Jordan is away with England?
Or does he take his chance in Div Two, where there are plenty of less talented seamers playing regular first team cricket for the likes of Glamorgan, Leics and Kent?
Whatever he decides, the very best of luck to him.

Take your chances and move to a Division 2 county. Hatchett is at the age when he needs to bowl as much as possible and given his lowering of the Sussex pecking order, can you rely on other seamer injuries to achieve this. The question: Which county would sign him as their primary attack? www.theargus.co.uk/sport/11609848.Sussex_trio_sign_new_deals/?ref=eb

Tell you what we will do you a swap Hatchett for Linley deal or no deal? I have always been surprised that Tim is not held in higher esteem....191 first class wickets at 27.72 is a very good record.

Linley is a one season wonder who only took so many wickets that season because of the ball that was being used in Division 2. I wouldn't swap.
