Good post philh.
Sussex have pulled themselves around nicely. Those first two T20s were awful, so it had to be upwards from there on.
What is working well for the Club is choosing the right O/S mercenaries. Who makes these picks? Andrew, Greenfield or someone else? Whoever it is deserves a big pat on the back.
Rizwan has been superb. McCoy an immediate revelation. Seifert looks very promising and with the dynamic Rashid still to come, perhaps, this is the way forward. No forgetting Philippe, of course.
Therefore, Choosing 3 or even 4 O/S during a T20 campaign, each playing three or four games, so long as they are up-to-speed and direct from the IPL, they bring fresh energy, a desire to impress and a professionalism that rubs off on the kids.
And let us not forget the Championship. Pujara has been sensational and Alsop has turned into a good loan signing. So amidst the regular criticism, in some cases justified, huge congratulations to the person responsible for making these O/S or loan decisions.
Perhaps, Sussex is paving the way for other counties to copy?

Who left out Ward? My dream team that didn't even have the skipper in it? Come on.
It's the process that I talk about not the end - I can't see into the future. You talk about it just being the seconds Devon, what did Ward get picked off the back of? It weren't the seconds cos he done nothing. Where's the path that puts Ward ahead of Orr or Haines? It's not a slight on Ward it's a slight on the management. Ward had a good over the other night, last night he nearly cost us the game for me. Just over a run-a-ball at the end isn't good enough.
Again though, it's not about what Ward or anyone does after the decision is made. Ultimately, he took 20 odd off one over, great, then was too slow last night. Much more to be done there.
Actually, my little fantasy side would have Ward instead of Wright.

Rizwan is an exception as he is prepared to play all formats; and he brings huge enthusiasm to each game. I would rather Sussex find good overseas cricketers that will be with the team in all formats for the while season. The T20 approach to overseas is shortsighted and in the long term will back fire.

Yeah, these people here Sponge are reactive. They're crack paperers. If stuff goes tits-up they wonder why. It does stink but sometimes you get lucky, which had zero to do with the decisions and everything to do with some individual.

Again though, it's not about what Ward or anyone does after the decision is made. Ultimately, he took 20 odd off one over, great, then was too slow last night. Much more to be done there. It isn't always about smashing fours and sixes Liquid, although I accept it is a big part of T20. It is equally about playing the 'match situation'. Ward came in last night at 89-5 after 9.4 overs with a further 57 needed off 44 deliveries at under 8 an over (not an overly demanding required run rate, but wickets at a premium) as our last 'proper' recognised batsman. He showed maturity above his years. We couldn't afford to lose another wicket. Contrast his approach to that of Rawlins, where it was noticeable Bopara more than once went to talk to him, but still Rawlins got out. Ward played the match situation and balanced the risk, striking a six and then four off Roland-Jones when required to release the pressure. Take out Bopara's last two shots and he only had 45 off 34 and that was largely thanks to some real filth that Hollman bowled at him. My point is if Ward hadn't played the way he did, we would have been six down and reliant on our lengthy tail. McCoy (unknown quantity), Lenham, Finn and Mills. They aren't in for their batting. We may still have got over the line, but the odds suggest it unlikely. Just as Ward played the situation at Taunton for me he did so again last night. Plus, he had the added pressure of DLS and the possibility of a downpour. We all have different views, but for me he hasn't done anything to warrant losing his place in the team, quite the opposite. You yourself have advocated giving youth a chance, well this is exactly what the management are doing. You are quite right, I like you was bemused by his selection, but in my view he has proved the decision to include him as correct. His second eleven performances certainly didn't warrant it, but perhaps we forget the coaches work with these players day in, day out and clearly saw something we didn't. I think Orr will come good, but is still for me behind Ward based on performance. Haines not sure about, equally Ibrahim. It is one thing battering second string attacks, another entirely playing against experienced overseas and domestic T20 opponents. The reality is and I know this is controversial, but the two batters without a score at present are Wright and Rawlins. Who would be brave enough to drop Wright for Haines or Orr? Rawlins (similar to Bopara before last night) is probably being selected more for his bowling. We are never going to likely agree, but the two things I would say, whether though design or good luck the Sussex management seem to have somehow come up with a formula capable of winning matches and secondly, as I am sure you have worked out I am presently very much in Team Ward's corner when it comes to his selection.

Agreed Ward deserves to keep his place. He should bat in the top 5. Alsop can bowl a bit of spin, so no keeping Delray in for his bowling.

You're probably right about the situation Devon but I felt he nearly cost us at the end. I think if he was facing and not Bopara we had a problem. I would keep him in, up the order, he is young and I wish him well - he's pretty much a homie. But I saw it again last night, I just don't think he is clean proper bat and I have three amazing eyes, at least. Time will tell.
