Once again mysterious decision making on selection and by Bopara fielding. Why didn't Haines bowl? Massive opportunity missed by Sussex to give their future players experience of playing. Why do we continue to pay overseas to play at the expense of our own talent. The T20 season debrief could be painful. Time for a rethink.

Not quite sure how we managed it as it looked heavy going, but somehow we have cobbled together a respectable total. Largely thanks to some good work from Garton and Rashid after we had stumbled to 131 for 6. 49 runs off the last four overs. They rely heavily on Vince and Mcdermott. If we can get them early and our seamers show up tonight, we have a chance. We didn't get Vince and Mcdermott early and our seamers didn't turn up and the outcome was inevitable. Eight defeats in our last nine matches, the one solitary win coming courtesy of an absolute gift from Surrey. Fair play to the team for not giving up, which they could easily have done given our horrendous campaign. But a lot of work needed over the winter break to get our T20 squad back to being a competitive force. If anything sums up the state of Sussex T20 cricket at present it is the last three overs or 2.1 overs to be precise. Over 18. I repeat my observation from the last game that I genuinely feel for Bopara, who other than himself, Rawlins and Rashid just has noone he can completely trust for the other eight overs. He turns to Crocombe AHEAD of both Finn and Garton, both more experienced, one a former international, the other who has been on the fringes and has IPL experience. That in itself speaks volumes. To give balance to my sympathy for Bopara, I would say he didn't help himself and could have mitigated this by sneaking an extra over of Rawlins in the powerplay and another over of Beer (whose first went for just seven runs) earlier to both delay and lessen his need to turn to our struggling seam attack. He could then have used himself and Rashid later. His field placings could also have perhaps been smarter. Over 19. Garton down on the boundary, talking to spectators suddenly and apparently unexpectedly gets a shout to bowl the vital penultimate over. Completely out of the blue, knee jerk reaction. A bowler who has consistently struggled the entire campaign. The tight over we needed never looked likely. Over 20. Even though we still had a chance, albeit a very slim one, we hand the ball to Will Beer out of sentiment rather than actually trying to defend the minimal amount required to win. Finn completes the game having bowled just a single over. Why even play him? Chaos!!

Given pace off seemed to be keeping the runs down, he would have certainly been worth a try. Couldn't have been more expensive than our quicker bowlers.

And Finn bowled 1 over I think so what was the point of having him in the side, might as well have let Crocombe bowl another and swapped Finn for Carter, another big hitting batsman coming in at say 5 might have meant we scored another 10 runs, which would have left Hants needing 41 off the last 3, an entirely different thing, and I know there are a lot of ifs there but still.
Is it right that Beer cold shouldered Bopara at the end, wouldn’t blame him.

Garton, Crocombe and Beer have each been screwed over by Bopara, Will should have got a second over at least in the middle part of the game, having gone for just 7 off his first, else what was the point of playing him. It’s just an insult, like a consolation prize, we don’t think you are worth a contract but you can turn out against Hants if you like, we can hide you in the field somewhere. Meanwhile the commentators reckon Hants chose to bowl to practice chasing in case they have to in the latter parts of the competition, now THAT is tactics and planning, right there. Spot on. Beer should have bowled a second over earlier. Garton was chatting to the crowd when he was called up to bowl the 19th over. They were under pressure with four overs left. One mistake by their batters and we had a real chance. It cried out for Bopara, Rashid or Rawlins when they were under pressure. A game we could have won. To be fair to our batters, we recovered well after a bad start. I’m not sure how we reached 180 but it seemed like a lot of sixes between some very poor overs. 200 would have done the job.

Boy am I glad this 20/20 campaign is over as from off the pitch to the team on it ,I think beer will be pleased to get away from the management who are inept he couldn't even show himself bowling wise v hants as ignored by bopara. Back to basics as can see Wright leaving as well so a clear out from kirtley down get flower in there and build a new side.as think right management it could be different next season.
