In the case of Prince Harry Duke of Sussex, the phrase “to burn one’s bridges” should be transformed to “incinerating one’s bridges to oblivion.” Thanks to a Spanish book publisher breaking the Spare embargo and releasing the autobiography early, news of its contents were leaked five days before the actual supposed global publication date. Now the world knows what a spoilt, deranged and deluded brat Prince Harry really is. Apart from a minority of anti-royalists and extreme far-left wokeists who will, no doubt, be cheering on Prince Harry and his black widow wife, the victim-addicted couple will end up with a discredited life in Hollywood propped up by a few sycophantic actors. The simple answer to Prince Harry's attempt to destroy the Royal Family. Don't buy the book! Paul Joseph Watson nails it again. www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1GpdSJXcHY&t=1s

The 416 page hardback book, Spare, is officially released today.
While no advance figure has been confirmed, The BBC claims publisher, Penguin Random House, paid Harry a staggering USD20m (£17m) advance for the book. Prince Harry’s deal consists of four different tomes, with a USD35m-40m (£28m-33m) price tag. This comes on the back of Netflix's unbelievable USD100 million series deal with Harry and Meghan.
To avoid too much embarrassment of riches and money for ol' rope, it is said Prince Harry may donate some monies to charity including to Sentebale, an organisation he founded in 2006 with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho to help children affected by HIV in Africa.
In the UK, the book costs £28 for a hardback and £20 for the audio. Already, these prices have been slashed by 50% or more by some retailers to attract sales.
We won't know how such sales will fair in the short-term, especially when most of the content was leaked 5 days ago. Hopefully, this book will become a damp squib, where Penguin Random House could lose a huge amount of money as it is a crazy advance. As to the other 3 books, God alone knows what they may be about. Perhaps, Victimhood: Parts 1, 2 and 3.
It is warming to note that the new TV series of Happy Valley, aired last Sunday evening, attracted over one million more viewers than Prince Harry's ITV interview with Tom Bradbury. Figures from the Broadcasters’ Audience Research Board (BARB), stated that 4.09 million people watched Prince Harry’s interview live, while 5.25 tuned in for Happy Valley. BBCs Call the Midwife came top on Sunday evening with 5.61 million.
Meanwhile, polls show Prince Harry's popularity with the public is at an all time low. No other Royal has ever been so unpopular. In a recent Daily Express poll, for example, 97% stated they would not purchase the book. The full first week sales for Spare will be released next Tuesday by Nielsen, which monitors book purchases in the UK.
Already, headlines like, 'Staff at London bookshops were surprised when the expected onrush of buyers failed to appear' are appearing today. One woman told BBC Radio 4, "I thought there would be a queue round the block, but I've turned up and there's no-one here. I am on my own."
The Daily Telegraph points out, "The sparse queues could partly be attributed to much of the book's most controversial moments having been leaked after it mistakenly went on sale in Spain before its official publication date."
Hopefully, Spare will appear in the Guinness Book of Records 2024 as the greatest financial publishing disaster of all time.

That 400,000 figure is based around advanced global book sales being sent out today. Let us see what sales are like in a month’s time. People actually buying the book from shops today is being described as “sparse”.
A majority of the purchases will take place in the first few weeks. After that the book, hopefully, will fade away.

A major point to clarify. How much profit does Penguin Random House make on each Spare hardback book, for this is where the real money lies? First, Harry may have signed a royalty rate of up to 20% per book. For the publisher there are the various costs to incur first, from the overheads of the office/s, staff wages, book designers, proof readers, printing costs, etc. etc, and the biggest outlay, marketing, global distribution/bookshop costs. The latter look for 50% take, at least, of price sold. On a price of £14, overall, including online sales, it is unlikely Random House will make more than £3.50 profit on each book given the variety of overheads incurred. For a paperback this could be less than £1. So, on an advance of £17 million, Random will need to sell between 5 and 6 million hardback/audio books to get their money back. If achieved then additional paperback sales are the profit. www.tagari.com/what-percentage-does-the-publisher-make-on-a-book/

This may annoy some here, but Richard Osman has Tweeted this:

gmdf,
I came across that tweet too from the highly overrated Richard Osman. Have you read his books? Being a writer myself, the story construction and way of delivery is terrible. The books sell on his Pointless reputation. I have not spoken to one person who genuinely enjoys reading them.
As to his comment, only around 5% of authors make any serious money, where JK Rowling or Peter James are freaks of nature. Given the extraordinary amount of publicity Harry has gained in recent years, attracting 400,000 advanced sales is to be expected. The point I make is the staggering advance The Duke of Sussex was offered.
Here is a top 10 list of the biggest book advances. It makes for interesting reading.
Michelle and Barack Obama ($65 million) Prince Harry ($20m) Britney Spears ($15m) Bill Clinton ($15m) Hillary Clinton ($14m) Margaret Thatcher ($11m) Bruce Springsteen ($10m) Amy Schumer ($9m) Pope John Paul 2nd ($8.5m) Keith Richards ($7.3m)

Why Successful Winchester Bookshop Refuses to Sell Prince Harry's Memoir SpareI know this bookshop. It is one of a dwindling, but successful independent outlets. Steve Scholey, MD of P&G Wells Booksellers and Stationers in College Street, Winchester confirmed he won't be stocking the controversial memoir as he hasn't seen any demand for it. Scholey explained, "We would normally take pre-orders for a book like this, but we haven't had any at all. In fact, we've had customers coming in, saying 'I do hope you're not going to be stocking it.'" He continued, "One of the joys of being an independent bookshop is that we can choose which books we would like to stock, and with something like this, we would consider that quite carefully based on how well we thought it would sell. Our key aim is to pay out staff and pay the gas bill, so if we don't think it will help with that, we can choose not to stock it." On why he thinks people aren't asking for the book, Mr Scholey added, "I've seen from YouGov that 80% of the population isn't interested in this, so in some ways it is a book that is of minority interest. From what I've seen of the sales figures, even those that say they might be interested, very few as a percentage have actually bought it." www.itv.com/news/meridian/2023-01-11/historic-bookshop-reveals-why-it-isnt-selling-prince-harrys-memoir-spareQuestion: So where have these claimed 400,000 advanced sales come from? If true, no doubt, from all around the world (published on the same day in 16 different languages). Some mainstream media outlets like CNN who are great supporters of Prince Harry are even saying 1.4 million (everything from audio books to digital and paper) have sold to date. The problem-being in our fake-news media world, who do you believe, anymore? Sales can be manipulated to any figure you want.

Some readers must think I am being a bit deranged myself for becoming so obsessed with Spare. The truth is I am really enjoying following the news unfold. For it is one of the biggest, if not the biggest and most controversial book-related story in living memory. Amidst our media world of increasing fake news in the guise of outright lies, deception, guile and/or manipulation, the Daily Telegraph who is somewhat anti-Harry, is now questioning the actual advance sum. The outlet believes it could be far higher. In 2021 The Daily Mail quoted an “impeccably placed source in the publishing industry” as saying that the Duke had presided over a publishing auction in Montecito, with representatives from different publishers attending either in person or via video call: “Those involved were actually very shocked by his approach which was to look at them coldly and state his demands – $25 million [£18 million].” The same source reported that “the final figure was way north of that, possibly as much as $35-40 million [£25-29 million]”, for a four-book deal.
The Duke’s lawyers responded with a statement saying that the Duke did not negotiate the deal himself, he did not personally bring a “package” to the table, and no publishers flew to the US to meet him. Other outlets report the advance as being $20 million (£17 million).
The article goes on: There have been suggestions that the four-book deal may be rounded out with such volumes as a book on the Invictus Games, or even a book on “wellness” by the Duchess of Sussex. However, it seems likely that Penguin Random House (PRH) will be expecting Spare, with its jaw-dropping revelations, to make up the bulk of what they have paid to the Duke. PRH will be hoping against hope that Spare is worth the money they’ve paid; an acquaintance who works for the publisher tells me his colleagues are banking on Prince Harry to deliver a hefty company-wide bonus in 2023.Good luck then, but don't count on a long-weekend at Le Manoir and updating your SUV to a top-of-the-range sports car. www.telegraph.co.uk/books/non-fiction/how-much-did-prince-harry-actually-make-spare/

Oops, Prince Harry's popularity drops further with another YouGov Poll, taken just a week after the previous one. It is even lower than Prince Andrew, who can't believe his luck that a nephew has taken all the previous sordid headlines away from him. YouGov states, "As the book continues to make headlines with its series of dramatic revelations about the royal family, YouGov’s royal favourability tracker finds just a quarter of Britons (24%) now think positively of Prince Harry, while 68% have a negative opinion – this gives him his lowest ever favourability rating of -44, down from -38 last week, which had been his previous record low." Spare is not so much "a kiss and tell", but "a kiss of death". yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/articles-reports/2023/01/12/prince-harrys-popularity-falls-further-spare-hits-Meanwhile, more and more disinformation is being found in the book. Very strange given Prince Harry recently headed up an organisation to overcome misinformation within social media.

This news is as predictable as night follows day. Those who paid £28 for an advanced copy of Spare, first had to suffer the humiliation of most high street book stores slashing the price by 50% on publication date, with a further cost blow occurring five days later with “unwanted” brand new copies appearing on Facebook Marketplace and other secondhand stores for £5. What a shambles. No doubt, two weeks from now, the hardback will begin surfacing in charity shops and boot markets for a similar price or 80% less than the original cost. The Daily Star took great delight on Saturday telling the world that, “A quick internet search shows several copies of the book on sale for just £5 described as unwanted gifts, with one copy already reduced to £3 for the kindle version.” I spoke to a staff member at my local Waterstones bookshop this week, an outlet that had a Spare promotion in the shop window, who explained after just three days, sales had collapsed to a trickle. She said, “We sold just one book yesterday and none today. We are hoping the lead up to Valentine’s Day may improve our sales.”
