The Times is reporting today that Steve Smith is in negotiations with Sussex about playing for us prior to The Ashes.

Good idea to let him get a false sense of security by facing Div2 attacks on the Hove featherbed!

We don't need him for 4 games. Waste of money. Flower bought our batters on last season; look at the stats. We need a good reliable overseas bowler.

Another "alleged scoop" from Lizzie Ammon. Below is the full article. It would be quite a coup for Sussex to pull-off, for surely Smith would rather play in a Division 1 county side than Division 2? Who knows, it could even lead Sussex to a tourist match against Australia. Australia batsman Steve Smith in talks with Sussex for pre-Ashes stint Steve Smith is set to play in the County Championship at the start of the season as preparation for the summer’s Ashes series and is in negotiations with a number of counties including Sussex. While many of the Australian Test squad will be involved in the Indian Premier League in April and May, Smith does not have a contract with any of the franchises and wants to play first-class cricket in England ahead of the Ashes in June and July. (Credit: Ryan Pierse/Getty)Smith has never played in the County Championship before, although he did have a short stint with Worcestershire in the T20 Blast in 2010. Smith’s management team have confirmed he is in advanced negotiations with Sussex but no contract has yet been signed. The 33-year-old is in conversation with a number of other counties and is likely to be available for about four matches ahead of the World Test Championship final at the Oval in early June. Australia are highly likely to qualify for the WTC final — provided they do not lose 4-0 in their forthcoming tour of India. Smith would be available for about four County Championship matches before his attention switches to the World Test Championship final at the Oval and then the Ashes. Australia will use the final as their only competitive warm-up match ahead of their bid to defend the Ashes and are set to cancel their planned fixture against an England Lions team. The Australian squad are then set to have a training camp — likely at Kent’s ground in Beckenham — and play intra-squad matches ahead of the start of the Ashes at Edgbaston on June 16. Smith has played 16 Test matches on English soil — which includes two against Pakistan in 2010 — and has a very good record here, averaging 59.55 despite the unfamiliar conditions with the extra seam and swing of the Dukes ball. Marnus Labuschagne will also begin his Ashes preparations on UK soil having re-signed for Glamorgan and is likely to be available for the first few weeks of the season.

With the news that Seales will not be joining Sussex due to his knee injury and as much as I’d like to see Steve Smith in Sussex colours, I don’t think spending big on a batter for 4 games is the best use of funds when it’s a seam bowler we need for the whole season.

At the start of the season, Archer & Robinson should be available. An overseas bowler is a must after the Glamorgan home game.

ECB pay their wages and we should count it as a bonus if they play a single game for Sussex next season. England rarely release their seam bowlers now. I agree we definitely need an overseas seamer after the Glamorgan home game.

Archer has to get some red ball cricket in though, he can't go straight back into the test squad without a couple of championship games for us.

Yeah we will have to, he will need a lot of overs under his belt. Cant see England playing Archer Robinson Broad and Anderson in the same team and i think Robinson is Englands best seamer currently particularly at home so there is going to be some rest and rotation during the series. Therefore no real reason to over rest these 2 leading into it.

Archer will be at the IPL of course and Sussex will stand a better chance of signing a top bowler once that tournament is over. For the start of the season, an attack of Robinson, Karvelas, Garton, HP and Carson wouldn’t be too shabby.

The IPL finishes on the 28th May and the 1st Ashes test is 1st June so i'd imagine he'd play some but not all of it. I think we'll see him for a game or 2 in May

If he ain't, he's injured. Some of you people should learn to read before you right. Spanners.

Don't talk to me about the 'right'. I appreciate the irony but I was incandescent with rage so I didn't spell check.
