1st eagerly anticipated match today.
Anyone like to predict the winners?
I’m going 3-2 England.

Unfortunately I think Australia will edge it owing to the strength of their batting.

I also predict that Coverpoint will be very unhappy with some of England’s declarations :-)

The best keeper in the world Ben Foakes should have played. Next test drop Duckett move Brook up to open and give the gloves to Ben. Johnny B his confidence is shot behind the stumps.

Shaping up to be a great final day with all 3 results possible especially with the rain about but I still think advantage Australia.

Fantastic game of cricket but a few questions to be answered re declaration and selection.

The first innings declaration was a costly mistake.

All a bit slapdash. You can’t afford many mistakes if you want to beat Australia. Huge credit to Cummins for a brave captain’s innings.
Foakes should be recalled. I don’t think we should shunt a middle order batsman into opening so we either need to go without a specialist spinner, relying on Root for spin or choose between Brook and Bairstow.

Way too much media hype... of course.
This is the strongest Australian team to tour England for quite some time. They are the No.1 Test side, for goodness sake, and beat India quite easily in the final. The idea that Bazball can somehow magically conquer the best on name alone is nonsense.
Way too many errors from England alongside a Captain talisman who is not fully fit; a wicket-keeper undercooked, overweight and with slow reactions; the country's top spinner injured for the series with a replacement who hasn't played Test cricket for two years, with calluses to prove it.
Warner and Smith haven't even got going yet.
Bazball may work against the lower-rated Test sides, but Australia are at another, altogether higher level. If Stokes isn't careful, his maverick and left-field decisions could become a joke as the series continues, where the media will turn against him. In hindsight, he should never have declared in that first innings, not when Root was being so destructive.
It will be interesting to see how England respond at Lord's next Wednesday. Much the same, no doubt. Stokes do or die? Bazball was fun while it lasted?

No inquest needed at all, if we didnt declare australia may have scored 600. The game changes so its impossible to know if the outcome would have altered.
Foakes has spilt a few for England missed stumpings as well, there are no guarantees at all.
I'd take you Warner and Smith and raise you with Brook, Pope, Stokes and Bairstow all yet to get going.
Simply it was a remarkable test match with a few fine margins going our way and the game could have been ours.

So for the second test we go without a specialist spinner but instead of playing Foakes we bring in Tongue, another seamer. I can only assume Stokes isn’t expecting to bowl much, if at all. I’m trying to stay optimistic but this doesn’t augur well.

Seems strange to me that they’ve gone with Tongue and not Wood who at least has a point of difference. Unless Wood isn’t fit?

Dropping Warner on 20 could be costly. The playback shows a straight-forward catch dropped by Pope. Unless England improve their fielding, there is little chance of us winning the Ashes. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/live/cricket/64959129

They could be 2-0 up Wicked so won’t matter that much!! Our batters need to adapt. You can’t just be one trick ponies and play the one way.
