Yep, not much evidence of the cohesive thinking I was expecting from Farbrace.
Time will tell but at the moment, as others have said, it’s a hot mess.

I think a hot mess is a little over the top. 4 months out from the season we know who the captain is going to be in the 2 formats leading up to the end of June. The rest is assumption and hearsay that weve missed out on targets and others have refused it. Id have rathered a conclusive long term captain but it is what it is and we go with a strong team led by a very experienced Captain.

Last September Farbrace raised expectations about the quality, and number, of new recruits. Generously you could say he was being ambitious and his heart was in the right place. Less generously, it was naive. In hindsight, of course available players chose other counties over Sussex. It reinforces where we now are in the pecking order. Surely this is the bottom and the only way is up.

I think we reached the bottom when Mark Robinson thought Peter Burgoyne was the answer!

55 off just 35 balls. Maybe he could bat higher in the T20 side.

55 off just 35 balls. Maybe he could bat higher in the T20 side. Yep and looks a good player for us at 8 in the CC Haines, Clark, Alsop, Pujara, Coles, Simpson, FHP, Carson, Karvelas, Seales, Hunt. Decent core that with 2 more recruits (hopeful dreams more than realistic hopes) we would have to be among the favs for promotion.

Can someone tell me, have Simpson or Mills been a Captain before? If so, when and for how long.
What Carson needs to become a better player is some healthy competition for his place in the Sussex XI. At the moment if he turns up in the red ball he plays.

I dont think Simpson has been captain for Middlesex maybe just the odd T20 game but he won a call up to the England ODI squad in 2021 against Pakistan but was part of the squad where covid destroyed the bubble and they all had to withdraw including George Garton. I doubt Mills has but a good one when you google is name theres a thread on Reddit with Is Tymal Mills the most overpaid cricketer of all time

I’m beginning to think that there will be no more new arrivals for the 2024 season. Does anyone have any news to the contrary?

I’m beginning to think that there will be no more new arrivals for the 2024 season. Does anyone have any news to the contrary? Any potential signings wont get through many of the leaks known, they mainly do the bad news, Farby keeps things like that very close to his chest. Therefore its just guesswork either way whether we are signing anyone or not. It makes no sense to sign a player for signings sake, they have to improve the squad. Seperate note i think the comms coming out of the club have vastly improved this winter, weve heard from the chairman in depth and Farby and i like the little touches theyve added like the Bertir Foreman interview yesterday its nice to get a decent insight to what these players get up to in the winter down under and to here what the standard is like. Ibrahim is having a very encouraging season and that can only be good for the lads confidence.

Listening to that Simpson interview it sounded like he was offered it fairly early on but wanted to get a feel for the place first.
Hearing him speak about ambition and professionalism i think weve bought in guys that are hungry but more importantly have a history of winning things and or going very deep in tournaments and competitions.

The key point is that Simpson has no experience of captaincy in County Championship red ball. Will be interesting to see how he manages our bowling attack. These interviews are meaningless. A new arrival will always say what we would expect to hear. He served Middlesex well. Got his benefit year, got bought out of his contract a year early and now has a three year contract at Sussex. Nice financial stability for him. He didn't mention this. Good luck to Simpson. His Captaincy will be judged by what he does in his first 7 games.
