Listening to that Simpson interview it sounded like he was offered it fairly early on but wanted to get a feel for the place first. Hearing him speak about ambition and professionalism i think weve bought in guys that are hungry but more importantly have a history of winning things and or going very deep in tournaments and competitions. The key point is that Simpson has no experience of captaincy in County Championship red ball. Will be interesting to see how he manages our bowling attack. These interviews are meaningless. A new arrival will always say what we would expect to hear. He served Middlesex well. Got his benefit year, got bought out of his contract a year early and now has a three year contract at Sussex. Nice financial stability for him. He didn't mention this. Good luck to Simpson. His Captaincy will be judged by what he does in his first 7 games. Why should he mention his private financial position on an interview like this. To add I never mentioned I think he's be a great captain but Chris Adams had no captaincy experience either so I don't really get your point. He's talking about winning and come from a winning background. Signing winners is good for me and I certainly won't judge a bloke on 7 games that's ludicrous.

Sussex players have always been international-quality when it comes to pre-season interviews. We can all look forward to Sean Hunt telling us he’s lost a few kilos and is bowling faster than ever.

I dunno i just think its a choice to see the negative in everything. The skippers first interview and hes getting dumped on dont seem fair to me.

Not so much negative to pre season interviews as indifferent . In post day’s play interviews our boys have a track record in saying they’re going to do one thing and then doing the opposite . We have certainly had enough skips who talk a good game and can’t back it up. I will judge Simpson solely on what he delivers on the pitch That said , I detect he is not one to be messed with . And I like that .

A complete change of subject....
The many of us who remember Imran in his pomp having such an impact with bat and ball at Hove in the 70s and 80s will struggle to imagine him serving 10 years in jail. I know that politics in Pakistan is a precarious career choice, to put it mildly, and Imran had reached the pinnacle prior to his ousting. But hard to imagine this former colossus of an athlete, one of the all-time Sussex and Pakistan greats, being locked up in a cell for such a long time.

Not difficult to imagine this happening really, Pakistan is one of the most corrupt countries in the world and run by the military rather than the elected. I reckon he’s lucky to be alive.

Populist leaders like Imran Khan are being fraudulently persecuted around the world. I agree with Joe that after one attempted assassination on his life, he is lucky to be alive and is probably safer off in prison and under the radar. Politics represents a cesspit of evil and corruption, especially now. You could argue Khan was naive and should have stuck with cricket. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-68150959

I was impressed by this press release. Good to see the data on ethnicity and school etc.

Putting to one side the modest number of ex state school pro cricketers, the link-up with Oxfordshire is a clever move. There is a steady flow of athletic kids who benefit from top facilities and top coaching from an early age. In recent years Magdalen College School alone has produced Coles, the Price brothers, Tom Scriven and one of the new recruits Julian Laird. Sussex is right in there with that school, and a few others. It’s a shame we didn’t get the Prices.

I was impressed by this press release. Good to see the data on ethnicity and school etc. Yeah they are getting there slowly, whether this has anyhting to do with RA leaving i dont know but since probably the end of November communication has been far clearer and a lot more content on offer than previous close seasons.

With Robbo left out of the 2nd Test he now hasnt played any cricket since July 9th 2023. I cant see him playing in many of the remaining 3 test matches either. If he doesnt and he isnt avaialable for us ont he 5th April you'd have to say the ECB is letting him down and this is an example of where a Central Contract system can fail a player.

Ollie has a rebellious streak in him and came to Sussex carrying some Yorkshire baggage. He’s done well at the club to turn things around, but the ECB find non-comformists difficult to handle and will only accept them if the player is outstanding e.g Flintoff, KP, Stokes, Botham etc..
Ollie is not outstanding and couple that with his consistent niggles, I agree, England will gently let him down which could augur well for Sussex if he remains at the club.

Id say his test figures are outstanding.
Given hes played all 19 test matches against elite opposition he deserves a place in the side.
