Last year there was loads of chat from the group about raising standards etc, this year it seems visible that there is a different vibe. The India tour looked a resounding success and the pictures suggested a happy camp which is contrary certain ex players reports. The players look fiiter as well, they look hungrier as competition for places is there at last. I think for the first time in years players are having to earn their spot and that should raise standards. Competition for places? First game with no Pujara our top six is this; Clark Haines Alsop Coles Carter Simpson Please tell me who else we could possibly pick for this top six? It’s the first game of the season and there isn’t any competition for places for our entire batting order! Ibrahim, Foreman, Rogers, Lion-Cachet. Just the 4 backups.

Ibrahim, Tear, Rogers and Lion-Cache. Forgot Tear, thanks Joe. Proven or unproven there are options.

Every club always has some youth players hoping to break through. Anyhow, the new season is approaching and this is the time for optimism. If we’re not plagued with injuries we ought to be competitive, at red ball cricket at least.

Beating RCB gives me some hope we might have a better T20 side than some give us credit for.

What we lack is proven quality in any depth. That’s not a complaint, I appreciate the financial restrictions, just a recognition of where we stand.

What baffles me when people say this is we have a squad of 28 players, granted not all available at the same time but how big do you want it?

That only happens when the first choice players have others breathing down their necks. We simply don’t have that, whatever the size of the squad. Of course I’d be delighted if that looks different by the end of the season because some of our youngsters have made great leaps forward. PS One of the reasons why the squad is that size is the number of overseas players flitting in and out. As I’ve said a few times, I don’t think that’s a winning formula. But I don’t want to sound too grumpy. This is March and the season is still full of possibilities. I’m feeling moderately optimistic.

Youd still have 25 players if you had 2 all year (which is incredibly unrealistic and youd reduce quality in the modern game). Any team would miss Pujara but having a player like Carter to come in and fill his shoes aint that bad!

They are all unproven kids. There is no competition for places in the batting at all. And there’s no competition in the bowling unless Oli Rob and the overseas play thats categorically untrue. Come on now AB. They’ve played 17 first class games between them that’s unproven and that is not competition for places. Now if we had kept Orr then even with no Pujara you would have had to leave out either Carter or Clark. I get the financial reasons why we can’t have a better squad (that’s another topic about how badly we’ve been run off the pitch) but let’s be realistic where we are. Our competition for places first game of the season is four kids who have played 17 times between them!

Lab1, you seem to be quite close to the action. Can you help with the following. What exactly has Pujara done? Why isn't Seales available for the Hants 2 day friendly? Where has Lamb gone from the Sussex 13 to face Hants? Why is Robinson only available for Hants game on Sat? Hope we're not being cursed with injuries so close to the start of the CC.

Pujara is arriving shortly Seales imo is pointless playing him in a friendly Robbo to get overs under his belt without risking injury Lambs being rested, likely to start as 3rd seamer.

Yes but it is competition you cannot say its not is my point. 17 first class games is better than i thought. Id rather have ibrahim as backup than 35 year old journeyman that averages 30. Angus Robson as an example of that.
