A decent signing, adds strength and experience to the batting but where does that leave Ollie Carter?

Plays all 3 so yes the obvious choice. Not great news for Carter but the need for competition covers all bases.

Excellent signing. Adds quality, depth and competition for places which will hopefully bring about improved performances throughout the squad.
Although I expect him to be first choice keeper across all formats, I do wonder if he may also play as a specialist batsman only somewhere in the middle order on occasion?

A good signing indeed. Could he be our new Captain? Can't be any worse than those we have tried already. I do worry though why we have given him (and Lamb) 3 years. Must have taken a large chunk of our playing staff budget. The competition for places should hot up. All we need now are a couple of bowlers.

He’s been a solid-enough pro over the years, so not a bad signing in that sense. But a three-year deal…why are we so generous with these long deals for old players?

We are talking about 35 year old solid, domestic-level pro not a world beater. I’d be surprised if there was a long queue of counties willing to offer such a generous contract. So maybe a shorter contract, more in our favour, would have been enough.

If Simpson is to take the gloves to allow Carter to focus solely on his batting (which is what I think will happen), then it's bad news for Clark and Ibrahim. Assuming Coles and Carter retain their spots in the Championship 11 for next season which they deserve to then we could be looking at Orr, Haines, Alsop, Pujara??? Carter, Coles, Simpson as a top 6/7 depending upon Pujara being retained. Unless Clark and Ibrahim reinvent themselves as genuine all rounders, I can't see them being in the picture for red ball. Especially not if Pujara is returning and/or if either/both of Nick Browne and Kiran Carlson are signed.
I'd personally love Pujara to return but I can't see it happening unfortunately. I think the club will want 2 overseas bowlers which doesn't say a lot for our current crop or our bowling coach, but that's another conversation altogether.
My ideal XI for next season (what I want but not what I think will happen):
Orr Haines Alsop Pujara Carter Coles Simpson (wk) McAndrew Lamb Carson Currie
Andrew out.

Simpson will bat at 6, FHP at 7.
Orr Haines Alsop Carter Coles Simpson FHP Lamb Carson O/S - (hopefully McAndrew) O/S

My ideal XI for next season (what I want but not what I think will happen): Orr Haines Alsop Pujara Carter Coles Simpson (wk) McAndrew Lamb Carson Currie Andrew out. That would be very harsh on FHP after holding our batting together last season. I’d put him ahead of Lamb in the pecking order. I also think that lineup is a bowler short. Assuming Simpson plays, and if Pujara returns, I don’t think there will be a starting place for Carter unless there are injuries (which of course there usually are). We could go for two overseas bowlers instead but as we know, in the T20 era, it’s so difficult to sign quality bowlers on anything other than very short contracts. A conveyor belt of new faces throughout the season wouldn’t be good for us. Judged purely on playing strength, I wouldn’t think this is a great signing because it doesn’t address a particular need but the rationale is clearly based mainly on adding experience and evolving the team culture. On that basis, we couldn’t have done much better.

Middlesex said the reason he left was because they couldn’t offer him such long term job security like Sussex. So I don’t think he joins with a two year contract
