We are talking about 35 year old solid, domestic-level pro not a world beater. I’d be surprised if there was a long queue of counties willing to offer such a generous contract. So maybe a shorter contract, more in our favour, would have been enough. Middlesex said the reason he left was because they couldn’t offer him such long term job security like Sussex. So I don’t think he joins with a two year contract I think he had one year to go at Middx. Sussex have given him a 3. A good deal for Middx and for Simpson; and hopefully Sussex. As has been previously reported, that is how we can attract the so called experienced names (Lamb has very little experience in red ball, so his contract length is a mystery). I do think both Carter and Tear need to be given some keeping duties. Would be shortsighted of Sussex to hack these two off. First Burgess appears from nowhere and now Simpson. We still need to bowl teams out twice to win red ball games.Where are the bowlers? |

Named as captain in the CC for the start of the season. About time too. Seems that Simpson had to be convinced to take on the role which would explain the delay. I guess captaincy plus keeping wicket plus being a frontline batsman is taking on a very big load, so that’s understandable. |

Its the obvious choice, I wonder why at the cricket society lunch they were told Dan Hughes was going to be captain?
Saying that i feel much happier John is leading the team and i hope he succeeds and becomes our captain in all formats for the period of his contract.

A massive climb down by Fabrace.
He very clearly stated last September , that he wanted one captain across all formats.
Looks like we might end up with at least 4 , 5 if Mills gets called up by England!!

Looks like we might end up with at least 4 , 5 if Mills gets called up by England!! Yep agreed, im torn between needing complete clarity for the whole season and some flexibility. A 7 game CC window early on is the norm now and will probably stay for a while so in future it might not be an unusual model. Lets hope Simpson loves it and is successful and does the ODC too so we end up with only 2 captains maximum. |

This smells of a fall back plan - ie we couldn’t get the new player we wanted (who would have been captain).
Overall we have a weaker squad than we did going into last season.
It’s set to be another season of lowly grind.
Hopefully therealab will make me eat these words in October.
