At the half way stage I gave us Bob Hope and no hope. After their powerplay I gave us even less chance. In fact I was anticipating a real thumping.
In the end, just as the Warwickshire match a valiant effort and an excruciatingly narrow defeat. Very reminiscent of our performances two to three seasons ago when we embarked on 'Project Youth'. Some very real positive moments and passages of play that built up hope and expectation, followed by the inevitable outcome of defeat.
Today's stand out performer Bertie Foreman, followed closely behind by Lenham and Ibrahim (who obviously was spurred on having read my earlier post). He still needs to sort his batting out though.
The other positive is another good display of glove work from Tear. Today's disappointment was Sean Hunt, who having put in some top performances in the Championship was below his best. Probably not helped by having carried the drinks for the first three games. It makes the decision to 'rest' Crocombe even more baffling.
Massive call by Clark to bowl himself in the final overs. Despite Hunt struggling, if it were me I would have still gone with him as the greater wicket taking threat.
Bonus positive, Carlson first ball. Please make this be the start of a precedent where he stops battering our bowlers.
We can bemoan the 26 extras and point to that as the difference, but for me it all comes back to the batting. We aren't batting our full allocation of overs, batters aren't going on when they are set and scores in and around 200 in 50 over cricket rarely win matches even on half decent wickets.

Another reminder of the thin line between success and failure. Had we just been able to take one more wicket in this and the Warwicks game we’d be feeling a lot happier about this competition.
As it is, our second tier bowling has stood up much better than the batting. The decision to play our young spinners has been justified and we can be confident about our longer term depth here. Sean Hunt remains an enigma but if he and Crocombe continue to progress we’ll have reasonable cover in the seam bowling department. Campbell has done okay and I’d like to see us give Currie an all-format contract next year.
In our batting, the more experienced players have been disappointing. Clark has been okay (and a decent captain) but needs a few big scores to seal the deal. Haines started the season like a train but has fallen away. Carter appears to be still low in confidence. The only player in the next generation pushing them for a place (when we reassemble our full team) is Rogers but he needs more experience.

Could have Haines Hughes Alsop Clark Coles Simpson Carter FHP Carson Robinson Unadkat

I’d replace him with a seam bowler, either Hunt or Crocombe.

Back the batting and its the same as weve been doing all season too allrounders with 2 seamers and 2 spinners.
