We may also have an advantage in that in mid/late September teams needing to overhaul us might not get the points they need due to weather. In terms of selection for Derbyshire, Carter is probably the closest to being the extra batsman if they play one. He did get 96 as an emergency opener in the home win v Leicestershire. If we didn't play an extra batsman against Yorkshire, it feels unlikely we'll do so here, in a game that's vital to win and with the kookaburra ball. I'm expecting a straight swap of Crocombe for Hunt or maybe an unchanged side. The point being that failed so you need to learn quickly from mistakes. I dont think the team will change but it should.

I wouldn’t be unhappy if Crocombe was given a chance as he bowled with spirit in the ODC. Not sure he has the skill to either take big wickets or bowl cheap overs though. So I’d opt for Karvelas, who is a higher class of bowler. What a shame none of the younger players put their hands up in the ODC. It’s crazy that FHP, Clark and one or two others have so little pressure on their places. The allrounder spot was right there for Ibrahim. Archie maybe warrants a go, but we don’t need another spinner.

Unfortunately Karvelas has had a poor season, arguably linked with lack of opportunities so I'd be surprised to see him get the nod but it could come down to who's looking best in the nets. If Currie had a red ball contract he'd be the obvious choice. As I said, I'd take a punt on Lenham who could bat at 8 or 9 and offer something different to the attack. Don't think they'll follow my advice though!

I am very nervous about this game. We were well and truly beaten up by Yorkshire. But, I think we should go with batters. So Hunt out. My order is, Hughes Haines Alsop Carter Coles Clarke Simpson FHP Carson Robinson Undakat
Man management is the key. If we go out with the right mind set we will win. Farbrace and Simpson need to sort this out. Sorry to be repetitive, but what does Kirtley do to our bowlers? I look at other Counties younger bowlers who seem to progress. Ours are very hit and miss. This needs to get sorted.

I think Farbrace is going to have to get ruthless at the end of the season. Players like Hunt, Crocombe, Carter etc have had years of chances now and if they’re not good enough will they ever be? It’s not as if we’ve got lots of youngsters doing exciting things in the 2’s either, no one has made a real impression. We have a core of decent players and have recruited well with the overseas but there’s no strength in depth so we are constantly scratching around to make up the XI. The 1st XI should really pick itself.

I think Clark could be playing for Horsham on Saturday the way he's played most of the year. Having seen Lenham & Ibrahim both outplayed by 2 Horsham players the other week when I went to see if the youth of Sussex was any good. I came away thinking 1 was , 2 weren't
I've said for years now, Salisbury and Kirtley have lots to answer for. Total lack of professionalism with most of these young men. It shows when they have to battle in a game.

I’ve noticed if a player has a decent run of games (sometimes only 2 or 3) they are rewarded with contract extensions. FHP had a good year last year with the bat and was given his county cap, he’s gone backwards. It’s all being given far too soon. In the past a young player would have spent at least a year in the 2’s and only if they progressed and performed would they get a chance in the 1st team. County caps were hard won with performances over years. It means nothing now.

It’s in its own stratosphere of bizarre. Ibrahim is also here for the long, long term. That crazy contract spree could come back to haunt us.

The 1st XI should really pick itself. When Lamb is fit, the first XI does pretty much pick itself. The only question would be Clark or Carter and Oli's form this year has made that fairly easy, especially as Clark provides another bowling option. We all know the squad is paper thin and we'd all like to see it bolstered but we'll have to operate within our financial constraints which don't give much room for manoeuvre. This is the unfortunate reality of today's county cricket and most other teams are feeling it too. We could save money by clearing out some players from that already thin squad but they'd be people on modest wages and wouldn't enable top drawer recruits. Having said all that, I hope there's still some scope for a bit of wheeling and dealing over the close season.

Carter for Hunt as the only change.
