4 sessions left in the Middlesex game, draw the likely result. All eyes on this one tomorrow. Without seeing the pitch, a win for Gloucs looks quite likely but will they hold their nerve?

If we do go up and dont sign anyone, with the encouragement of Clarks and Crocombes performances (yes i know one game) we could go in like this. Haines Hughes Alsop Clark Coles Simpson Lamb/FHP Carson Robinson Crocombe Seales Zero backup is the big concern and I think we need at least 1 batter to push the rest and a stronger backup seamer. That team will struggle to win a game in Div 1 Need 2 batsman and a back up bowler to stay up

A ruthless, high quality win with contributions from many of the team.
More than an eye will be kept on tomorrow at Lord’s

With 2 batters coming in who are you out? Clark i guess would be one of them, Alsop? Big day up at Lords today where if Gloucester can do it we are all but up 36 points clear we'd be and well ahead on wins and bonus points (im not sure how its settled if points are level) meaning 12 points over 2 games. After Scarborough to win 2 games by an innings shows the mental strength and the skill this team has.

With injuries (we have been exceptionally lucky this year), potential international call ups and form issues at the higher level it’s not as simple as that. You can’t have Oli Carter and Henry Rogers, as the next cabs on the rank in Div One. Looking at Lamb and FHP’s bowling, there is also a case for Clark at six (mainly bat with some bowling) to accommodate a new batting signing. Then Simpson at seven followed by Carson.

If that 1 player isnt available then yes add depth but id rather quality over quantity. Clark at 6 and Simpson 7 is probably exactly how you want to go in to div 1 using Clark as your 4th seamer.

Hopefully James Kirtley will develop Clark’s bowling as a priority this winter and he can get up to FHP/Lamb level at least, if he isn’t already. Then you have Clark competing with FHP and Lamb for one spot, which is about right. It shouldn’t be FHP or Lamb for one spot. Clark at six with improved bowling is actually an exciting prospect. with less self-imposed pressure on himself as a frontline batsman he could do really well. He has the shots and the determination in spades.

lab1,
I cant see us signing any more than 2 players this summer so id imagine the winter programming will be a heavy focus on upskilling our current crop.
If that is correct and we "do" get promoted, I can't see us lasting long in Division 1.
If Simpson gets injured, for example, who is going to replace this run-machine? He is 36 years-old and far more vulnerable to physical aberrations. That also applies to Hughes.
Sussex have been extremely lucky this season with few if any injuries to our top players. Apart from Haines, Alsop and Coles we require consistent runs from our other players.
Imho, we need at least three if not four top class players as cover for batting and bowling injuries. Yet, who knows how much money Sussex have in the coffers? One thing I am confident of, Farbrace will know who to sign if there is available money.
His recent past record is top notch.

A lot of ifs there. If Simpson falls out of form, If Seales isnt as effective you can question If Clark becomes a 1000 run a season batter. You cant pre empt the Ifs. I cant see our budget stretching a lot more than it has been this year but I may be wrong, like i said on an earlier post signing players for signing sake wont help. The room for improvement is there for our early 20 somethings and 1 or 2 Div 1 standard players would be enough. The upskilling project worked in the T20 game i think it could work still in te CC.

BRILLIANT!! Well done Gloucestershire for holding your nerve. They beat Middlesex by 4 wickets and achieve only their second win of the season. What perfect timing for Sussex. Unfortunately, we will have to do the dirty by beating them on Saturday. Life is rarely fair. And then, lo and behold, we play Glos again, this time in the Championship 3 days later.

Gloucs win ... which is good for us in the Championship but let's hope it hasn't boosted the morale of our next T20 opponents by much!

Focus now on getting the 28 needed for the title, a richly deserved title. From a selfish point of view id like us to win it at home.
