Another defeat for England. Very disappointing, but sadly, not surprising. Sri Lanka are a very experienced and skilful one day side. And England are neither. Oh well, there's always the rugby....

Ominous but unsurprising, the final training session before the third one-day international cancelled because of torrential rain in Hambantota. When borderwoman dragged me off to Sri Lanka in September, I protested that we should go in November/early December, so I could watch the ODIs. She wasn't having it, booked the trip against my wishes and I grumbled all the time we were there. I think I'm now going to have to eat a slice of humble pie and thank her, because we had glorious weather in September and ever since the England team landed in Colombo, it seems to have rained most days. By contrast, we got back yesterday from five days of fun and fado in sunny Lisbon, where the temperature was 20 degrees centigrade! Great quote from Tredwell, who England put up at yesterday's press conference in place of the hapless Cook. Asked how the team planned to turn their results around, he could only answer: "I guess the hope is that we can start again. A change of scenery might bring a change of luck." Well the change of scenery hasn't brought a change in the weather and I fear the change of luck is going to prove equally elusive. Playing better cricket rather than praying to luck might be a better plan!

According to Lonely Planet's weather guide to Sri Lanka borderwoman got it just right for you: Sri Lanka is tropical, with distinct dry and wet seasons. The seasons are slightly complicated by having two monsoons. From May to August the Yala monsoon brings rain to the island’s southwestern half, while the dry season here lasts from December to March. The southwest has the highest rainfall – up to 4000mm a year. The Maha monsoon blows from October to January, bringing rain to the North and East, while the dry season is from May to September. The North and East are comparatively dry, with around 1000mm of rain annually. There is also an inter-monsoonal period in October and November when rain can occur in many parts of the island.

Meanwhile elsewhere on the island, after two fixtures were rained off, Rashid stars for EPP in Sri Lanka where the England Performance Programme team beat Colombo Colts by 43 runs, unusually featuring an all-spin attack headed by Adil Rashid with 4-48. Patel, Parry, Riley and Ansari shared the rest of the wickets. Peter Such must be pleased and surprised that so many of his charges are getting the opportunity to prove themselves.

Quite what Morgan has done to retain his place is beyond me, though the same can also be said for the captain.

Poor James Tredwell. The most economical spinner in England, dropped by Kent and sent out on loan, and now dropped from England's ODI side to make way for another seamer. Jordan is the beneficiary and I'm glad about that, but it is hardly fair on Tredders. It is also strange given that at the pre-match press conference two days ago, England put Tredders up as team spokesman instead of Cook. Why you would make him the spokesman if you intended to drop him from the game he was put up to comment on? Perhaps he is being punished for letting the cat out of the bag on the paucity of England's tactics, which he summed up as : "I guess the hope is that we can start again. A change of scenery might bring a change of luck."

The whole set up is totally confused.
If they are making this many changes why not give Taylor a go in place of Morgan?
Doesn't matter now as this game is going to be rained off. Bring em home, this is pointless.

I see the seven overs Tredwell wouild have bowled were split between three 'all rounders' and went for 73.
From afar it is hard not to conclude that the England management is dithering around without anything that could be termed a tactic, let alone a strategy. Given that Cook hasn't got a clue what to do as captain, it does require some decisive leadership and incisive decision-making from Moores - and it does not appear to be forthcoming.

Here's one for all you conspiracy theorists: The ECB haven't got the courage to drop Cook from the ODI team, he never gets injured, so the only way to get him out of the side was to get the bowlers to take their time yesterday so that Cook gets suspended for a slow over rate. What will be interesting is if the opening pair in the next match (Ali and Hales, presumably) share a century partnership.

Taylor in for Cook (suspended) then and Morgan luckily keeps his place despite another failure.

The next match is very poignant. Can Morgan rediscover his form, yet again, score a thrusting 100 and England easily win under his captaincy to level the series? Meanwhile, Hales also scores a quick 100. Then what will the selectors do?
fb, Interesting conspiracy theory. Nothing surprises me these days.

Not so extraordinary as cook had one slow over rate offence already ...peter Moores says this clears the slate before the World Cup.like footballers deliberately getting a fifth yellow card to be banned in a match they were going to be rested from anyway.
