A wonderful day. The ground looked very full - probably 1,000 or more up on Friday evening. Sri Lanka were simply too good against a Sussex B team. Only Machan shone. Felt sympathy for the crowd who had paid to watch 40 overs and got less than 30.
Don't read too much into it. The Club got a financial boost and the Sussex players gained a suntan. Back to the real world next week.

Just got back from the match this afternoon. Very one-sided of course, but Sri Lanka are the World T20 champions, so don't be too hard on our boys. To be fair, they were up against men today. What a lovely sunny Sunday afternoon to watch cricket at Hove - just like the 'old days'! No alcohol fuelled faux-excitement of the Friday night variety, eg the scoreboard failed to catch fire when a wicket fell. It was just a very pleasant afternoon. The crowd looked marginally smaller than Friday night's, and I will be interested to hear how many were there. I hesitate to blame our bowlers, but we were treated to a wonderful display of T20 batting. Dilshan's 50 came in 18 balls, Vithanage took a pedestrian 22 balls for his 50. I suspect anyone worried about the result of the match might have failed to enjoy the batting master class. www.espncricinfo.com/england-v-sri-lanka-2014/content/current/story/745641.html

Judging Sussex on the result would indeed be harsh, they are the world champions, but the manner of the defeat was a little disturbing.

Well played Machan.

Agreed. His aggressive 63 was exactly half our total score. The only other innings of note was a modest 14 n.o. off 10 balls from Zaidi. He certainly looked more confident than he has done.

Sri Lanka were imperious. I don't see any county beating them at T20 in this form and England have a mighty job on their hands on Tuesday at the Oval. The Sussex bowlers were bludgeoned to all parts and made to look foolish. But this is Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile their bowling, particularly the seamers was excellent. In one over Yardy had to dig out 3 yorkers from Malinga. Many a batsman would have perished.
So, go easy on the team.
Come next Friday and the visit of Hampshire, Sussex will be facing a side they can compete with.

Felt sympathy for the crowd who had paid to watch 40 overs and got less than 30. Don't read too much into it. The Club got a financial boost and the Sussex players gained a suntan. Back to the real world next week. So to pick up on the theme in another thread about the wisdom or folly of the new Friday night T20 boozalot league, one thousand more people turned out to watch a t20 game on a weekend afterrnoon in Hove than did so on Friday night? This backs up the overwhelming trend of the first weekend of the T20 Bash - poor crowds across the country on Friday night, but 13,500 at Lord's on Sat afternoon, a sell-out at Taunton on Sunday afternoon and a bumper crowd for a one-off T20 at Hove today that exceeded the attendance at the same venue on Friday night by perhaps 20 per cent. I'm not sure why you are so convinced the ECB has found the golden bullet that will save county cricket in rowdy, boozy flood-lit Friday nights for the T20 with Saturday as a day of rest and near empty stadia for the LVCC on Sundays. It seems utter folly to me, and I said so when the plan was first announced. But perhaps it isn't about the attendance figures at all, and more to do with the money drunken Friday night crowds spend at the bar, even if there are fewer of them than the broader spectrum who would attend if such matches were played at weekends? By the way, as more info trickles out about Friday night's attendances, the greater the fear grows that the ECB were led up a cul de sac by their wretched focus groups. Durham have revealed that there were just 2,633 souls in their ground on Friday night , more than 50 per cent down on their average attendance of 5,433 at their home T20s in 2013. That Test match grounds such as Headingley, the Ageas Bowl and the Riverside are recording Friday night T20 crowds that are dramatically down on 2013 will be a real concern to the ECB - especially as they have pledged there will be no alteration to the programme before 2017 at the earliest, even if it all proves to be a terrible mistake. By then it may be too late. Meanwhile, you say "the club got a financial boost" today. Well, a short-term one for sure and welcome. But will the extra 1000 who apparently came today turn up again after witnessing a game that barely lasted as long as a queue in Cafe Pasticci?

bm,
While I understand where you're coming from shouldn't we wait until mid July and make a judgment then?
Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka game attracted more people because they are the T20 world Champions with players like Dilshan and Malinga. That holds a cache, surely? Also, the two wins on friday and saturday might have attracted some more and a sunday afternoon along with the hottest day of the year also brought in further people. Only 30 overs was a downside but I heard no complaints about this from those sitting around me.
What will be interesting to see is the Hove attendance figure next friday against Hampshire. The weather looks to be hot and sunny - that is if you believe a 7 day weather forecast.

One belated thought about yesterday's match; when it was clear that our bowlers were struggling, why didn't Yardy put himself on? He is a very experienced T20 cricketer, and was in the England team that beat Sri Lanka in a World T20 final!

More important from a spectators and marketing view why didn't he field first?
A marketing disaster! How to woo new spectators into Hove! Make sure you don't see the best T20 team in the world play the whole match! It will take a lot for me to come along again to be short changed.
A full bowl at SL would have allowed the bowlers to learn something. 1 over is a waste.
However the 2 batsmen were a class above. How do they do it? They don't have overseas stars playing for local teams. Is it all about giving a chance to your own and having the best players talking and coaching them?
Time the Sussex management learnt this? I doubt it though. The mentality is to buy short term.
Finally, SL to thrash England based on what I saw yesterday.

Interesting point, grandavefan - "A marketing disaster! How to woo new spectators into Hove! Make sure you don't see the best T20 team in the world play the whole match!
It will take a lot for me to come along again to be short changed.
Should there be joined up thinking between the commercial and cricket departments?
Should Yardy have bowled first, so as to maximise the entertainment? If he's not bothered by the entertainment factor, then are the marketing boys wasting their time?

Easy, before the game the coaches discuss, do you want to bat first? Yes. You win it and bat, if I win it we'll field, not difficult? I see no difference than contriving a finish in a 4 day game, Durham? This was a one off, a money maker, future enticement of spectators for the next game(s). It failed. We lost 25% of the game. Can I have a re-fund?

This is the reaction I feared from many of the additional 1000 spectators who turned up on Sunday. All very well s&f hailing a bumper pay day for the club but not good for the future if potential new supporters felt short-changed by a game that only lasted 29 overs and are deterred from returning.

Agree withGrandavefan we were under strength and should have seen game as an entertainment and fielded. Good to see the players signing so many autographs afterwards but the crowd had come to see a full game. Mind you had we fielded they probably wouldn't have seen that either! In fairness injuries don't help.
