I wonder if Matt's PR machine is staying deliberately vague about his comeback in order to preserve his contract at Sussex for as long as possible? Having said that, I can't see Sussex paying him anything in 2015 unless and until he actually plays for the county. I wonder if the club has any input or influence on these public statements? Years of exposure to the financial side of cricket has made me cynical, so I apologise in advance if I'm being unduly sceptical about Matt's position.

Good journalism by Steve Hollis who seems to have pushed Matt harder on the chances of his return than any of the Fleet Street interviewers did earlier this week. Steve gets a "50-50" out of him, which I think is the most pessimistic prognosis we have been officially given to date. Well done to SH for some top reporting; not his fault that the story is so discouraging.

There should be an insurance policy in place for employer and employee in the event that Matt is unable to fulfil the terms of his contract and is forced to retire.

Steve has pushed to get some relevance out of these interviews, which had been arranged to promote his One Pro cycling venture, in contrast with the Guardian, who didn't even get one of their cricketing journalists to interview him, and the Telegraph.

I'm aware of that, but presumably, once he retires, the contractual commitment will cease?

This for me is the most telling quote:
“With an injury like this it could affect my life after cricket if I try to come back. I don’t want to be walking with a limp for the rest of my life so I have to take that into consideration.”
So, already one eye on his future cycling career? While I would be delighted if Prior makes a full recovery and plays for Sussex again, 50/50 are generous odds.

Another move in this slow but significant progress towards endgame here Matt Prior: ECB to assess wicketkeeper's Achilles injury. This one has the hallmark of the lawyers asking "an independent body", now that he is no longer an England-contracted player, to perform a formal assessment after which.....statements of regret from both sides, a settlement negotiated over notice periods?.... and a swift move into pro cycling, which is clearly where MP wants to develop a new career. Good luck to him.

So is Colin Graves now a qualified medical practitioner as well? Personally, I'd have thought Matt would be better off hobbling/cycling along to the nearest casualty department. Although thinking about it, perhaps these days the ECB is the nation's paramount casualty dept!!!

Although thinking about it, perhaps these days the ECB is the nation's paramount casualty dept!!! As you well know, borderman, nothing gets done these days without Comrade Graves' consent. I look forward to the next home Test where heavy rain threatens resumption of play, and a bulky figure clambers down from the executive box, clutching a mop and bucket ( £4.99 the set, exclusive at CostCutters) to ensure the masses are entertained. On Edit: Metaphor amended on advice from leedsgull.

I would not describe Graves as "lithe". Corpulent might be a better choice.

He does, of course, but sometimes chooses not to exercise it, when sales of umbrellas and raincoats are flagging, for example.
