Matt hopes to play in the CC match against Middlesex, starting next Monday: www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/27458260Does anyone know whether Matt's cycling activities have helped or hindered his achilles problem?

And the latest unwelcome news in the Guardian today Matt Prior’s England return likely to be delayed due to injury concernsis that, according to Robinson, Prior will not keep against Middlesex and is 50/50 to play at all.“He’s not been ruled out, I can say that,” added Robinson. “So we’re still hopeful of him playing as a batsman. But it’s not a straightforward line. We might even leave it until the day of the game.” This kind of announcement is becoming so regular that I wonder how serious this injury is, and whether the former strategy, announced as to keep him going this summer, pending an opertion in the autumn, is worth continuing. If his ankle isn't responding to whatever training and palliative measures are being applied, wouldn't it be better for him and perhaps lengthen his career to accept this season might be over, have his operation now, and give him the winter to get back to full health and mobility?

George Dobell claimed on cricinfo that it is a long-term injury and that he would not be fit to play for England this summer and implied that there was a cover-up to conceal the full extent of the injury.
Perhaps he was right. Mind you , he also said Stephen Davies would be England's keeper in the first Test - and the chap has now given up the gloves even in the Surrey side. So who knows?
I suspect nobody really does, even Prior and the physios, hence Robinson's comment that the decision on his fitness may not be taken until the morning of the match.

Not sure this interview with England selector Mick Newell is particularly good news for Prior's hopes of an England return:
"After what happened in the winter, the first Test against Sri Lanka is a massive game for England and you have to go into that match with people who are 100 per cent fit. You don't want to be worrying about injuries or managing fitness. The 'keeper situation is massive. If you are going to have high-quality seam bowling you want to have a good man behind the pegs. There are two camps of keeper - there is the Kieswetter, Buttler, Bairstow group and there is the Foster, Read group, more the old-school wicketkeeper. I watched Foster last week and he was terrific. There will be an interesting debate there. What has come out of the winter is a complete rethink with five, six, seven spots up for grabs, which is a bit scary but exciting at the same time."
I'm impressed that Newell went to see Foster at first-hand. He must have used a rare day off when Notts weren't playing to go and see Essex, so he's clearly taking his England role very seriously.

Assuming Matt's not fit, I would love to see Foster behind the stumps - a proper wicketkeeper. Don't think it will happen, though.

Yes. I'm sick of it personally. If you don't know if someone is fit, they ain't fit. Prior should be nowhere near the England team at the moment.

According to today's Argus, Matt will keep tonight in the T20 Blast at Glamorgan. And according to the main story on the front page of The Cricket Papert today, he is still hoping to play in the First Test. Mind you, the other front page story is about a bumper crowd turning up at the Oval tonight to see KP!

THis is cruel - Cricket Australia has compiled a video of Prior's bloopers over the summer and posted them as a show reel on the CA website under the heading:- Future dire for Prior : Take a look back at Matt Prior's nightmare summer behind the stumps.www.cricket.com.au/video/Future-dire-for-PriorI tend to agree his days are numbered as he is no longer able to meet the high standards he has always set himself. But as one of the comments after the video notes: "Cricket Australia mocking another country's player for getting older and struggling in a series that doesn't even involve Australia really is, genuinely, offensive." I suppose CA might counter that the ridicule is no different than that which England fans dished out to Mitchell Johnson before he turned the tables on them last winter. But there is a big difference between fans goading a player from the cheap seats and a national cricket board doing it via its official website.

Prior gone - standing down from all cricket for the rest of the season.
A great England career over. Well played, Matt. I hope we get a chance to say a proper goodbye to him at Sussex, but I suspect he will never play f/c cricket again.

And some harsh but probably true words about Prior from Dobell, who now seems to have become Piers Morgan's messenger boy:
"After equalling the record for the most byes conceded by an English keeper in a home Test for 80 years, he fell to a pull shot for the second time in the game as obligingly as if providing catching practice. Whereas Kevin Pietersen was labelled selfish [for similar dismissals in Australia] , Prior was informed by Alastair Cook that it was "up to him" if he wanted to continue playing. There is more than a sniff of hypocrisy about such inequitable treatment. But whereas "Matty" is one of the boys, Pietersen was an outsider. Merit hardly comes into the equation. The decision to dispense with Pietersen, England's highest runscorer in the Ashes, remember, remains weak and damaging."

Such a shame his career had to end like this when he has been so good for England, only a year or so back he was regularly rescuing England from disaster. It's almost as though all those heroics wore him out. Glad he has been decisive, a lesson there for Cook methinks. Hope he has a good rest then comes back for Sussex as a batsman, he is only 32 and that's a long retirement in prospect.

Prior gone - standing down from all cricket for the rest of the season. Are we surprised? The rumours I'd heard was that after the Ashes debacle he was considering giving up cricket then. Perhaps, it was simply mental malaise but his recent and passionate interest in cycling is no coincidence. How long will his cricket sabbatical be? Will he even return to the sport if his cycling interests take over completely? Prior claims his stepping down is due to his achilles injury and a planned operation. I believe it goes deeper than that. Like Pietersen, Prior's been setting up various new businesses in recent times including his 'cycling holidays'. Don't be surprised by an early cricket retirement and a brand new career ahead. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/28413373
