And some harsh but probably true words about Prior from Dobell, who now seems to have become Piers Morgan's messenger boy: "
I'm a bit puzzled by this claim. Prior conceded 17 byes in the first Indian innings and 19 in the second, totalling 36. 80 years ago at the Oval against Australia Leslie Ames conceded 4 byes in the first innings before being injured while batting. Frank Woolley took over as wicketkeeper in the second innings and conceded 37 byes. Woolley, of course, was a slip fielder who never kept wicket and was also 47 at the time. Can anybody throw any light on where the "record" claim has come from?

I have a feeling he might play for Sussex. I see the next Sussex captain.
He has things to prove to himself, leadership being one I believe.

I'd love him to play on for Sussex, as a batsman if his injuries prevent him from keeping. Could cause us problems with the budget though if we have to pick up his fairly hefty salary

Robinson on Prior: “The media have hunted him mercilessly and made his position very difficult.Everybody scrutinises every move he makes to the extent that it almost makes it impossible to do his job as he is under so much pressure."
Not one of our coach's brighter pronouncements. How has he been 'hunted mercilessly'? Has he had his phone hacked? Had his private life picked over by the tabs and been exposed as a philanderer or a drug user ? Had reporters outside the gates of his children's school?
Apart from Cricket Australia's silly video of his bloopers, I haver seen no 'hunting', just a legitimate discussion of his dropped catches, leaking of byes and poor shot selection in the last Test, which showed he was not fit and should not have been playing - something which Prior himself than confirmed with his subsequent announcement.
I'd say Panesar last summer came close to being 'hunted mercilessly' by the media but I don't recall any objection from the Sussex coaching staff over that. Indeed, there were people connected to the county who were feeding it.
Robinson goes on to say: “He has a lot of international cricket left in him so he will take stock and then hopefully come back strong and get himself available for those Test matches in April.”
Possibly. But if so Sussex have a big problem. Who is going to pay Prior after November, because with the uncertainty over his fitness and the strong chance that Buttler will do well and make the job his own, it would be absolute folly for the ECB to award Prior a new £500k central contract for 2015 when they come up for renewal in three months time.

Spot on, BM. I guess Robinson's reaction may stem from panic at the prospect of having to make a very difficult decision: either pay Prior a hefty salary (purely as a batsman?), or tell him there's no room for him at Sussex.

Good to see that even though belatedly, and under threat from the ECB over breach of copyright, rather than any issues of what is appropriate for the website of a national cricket authority, Cricket Australia has finally taken down from its website the mocking collation of Prior's slips and fumbles. CA removes Prior fumbles packageAt a time when the spokesmen for ICC and for domestic Boards are all mouthing pious platitudes about the need for players to set an example by their on-field behaviour, this piece of petty point-scoring rather undermines their whole moral crusade.

I see Matt is to go under the knife when the seasons over in an attempt to cure a longstanding injury problem. Why does he have to wait until the end of the season?

Achilles surgery scheduled fot 4th Sept according to BBC with four months recovery period. Surprised he didn't have the operation earlier. Will he be retained on his central contract, it would seem harsh to discard Matt without giving him a chance to prove his fitness

Jon - in previous articles it was reported his achilles was too inflamed for an early operation and that as soon as soon as it subsided they would operate.

Matts injury is reported to be much more serious than originally thought with a long tear to his Achilles' tendon. He was an England player when this happened and played on while under England's care. Now he is returned to Sussex injured and unable to play. and with no contracts.favorites in the past ( jones, Vaughn, Giles etc.were awarded contracts when injured.....suppose Matt can't play but will remain a Sussex cost? Shouldn't they in fairness compensate Sussex for this cost. www.independent.co.uk/sport/cricket/ecb-gives-injured-trio-central-contracts-416833.html

I think Sussex would have a good case for compensation here, but I suppose it depends on how and where he sustained the injury. It's a wear and tear injury so it's unlikely to have been sustained playing for Sussex , as his appearances for the county have been sporadic

I would have thought that the ECB would have paid the bill for his treatment. He was clearly having medical advice whilst on his central contract which said he should wait until a certain time before having surgery. I'm pretty sure he will be fit to play come the summer though I expect he'll give up keeping wicket.

Prior injury worse than first thought Matt Prior has said he faces a massive challenge to get back into the England side after discovering his Achilles injury was far worse than expected. Instead of a routine operation, surgeons found a large tear up the middle of his tendon. Prior told the Daily Mirror: "It was like going to see the doctor for a sprained ankle and being told you've got a double break. When I woke up, the first person I saw was the England physio Ben Langley. I just took one look at his face and the first thing I said was, 'Am I never playing cricket again?' "I was shocked - and so was the surgeon who apparently said during the operation. 'No wonder he was whingeing!'"
