Well played Matt, a great career for England, always wanting to entertain and play for the team. A big part of the Sussex and England teams that really got me addicted to cricket, I hope his new venture is as successful.

Nobody sums up the spirit of Sussex cricket, more than Matt Prior

A fantastic servant to the club and possibly the greatest wicketkeeper-batsmen (only Jim Parks would rival him and he was before my time so hard to compare) we have ever had.

What with the Prior money available and Mags English passport due in July, could we see a top overseas Championship player at Hove for the last 2 months of the season?
Meanwhile, huge condolences to Prior's retirement but don't be surprised if all his energy and ambition will be channelled into PRO Cycling winning the Tour de France in a few years time.
PS. how unique is it that two England keepers are forced to retire due to injury in the same week?
PPS. Great to see KP Tweeting Prior a positive message and Prior responding in kind.

Is it very unique? Like that HH?
Yeah pretty decent player really, much better than me for sure. Swashbuckling, dynamic, devastating and sometimes brutal - and he was even better. No surprise but still a shame. A big OS signing may be on the way, which I should be against but I don't care anymore - hope it's a good one. Batter or spinner? I'd go batter, opener to be precise.
Good luck with the cycle biking MP - don't care for cycling myself, very boring and too much like hard work.

I'm surprised it's taken this long, TBH. The plus side is that there should be a good deal of slack in the salary budget "going forward" (god, I hate that expression!) Do you mean "subsequently"? No, he means now!

I wonder if this is true (that there should be a good deal of slack in the salary budget) - or has the Club been able to take some form of salary insurance covering long term injury? If so, they won't have been paying his wages. It would also be interesting to know when he stopped being paid under his central contract and whether that had insurance cover. Perhaps the Club could comment so we know whether to hope for a marquee signing. We could do with one on current form!

We will no doubt have been picking up the tab at some point. We have lost RHB, of course, since we pushed the boat out to sign Shahzad and Mills, and Jordan's wages are now picked up by England. The club has already told us, the terms of the Mills deal take into account fitness and ability to bowl, so there should be some slack from those deals. Of course we have signed Robbo Junior, but I can't imagine his salary would bust the bank.

When other players have lost their central contracts, the counties invovled have reported serious and immediate problems with the impact on their salary budgets, so I'm guessing Prior reverted to the Sussex payroll on 1/10/14. As he was already on the long-term very dodgy injury list by then, I doubt the club was able to take out insurance on him, because the premium would have been astronomical. Prior left the Sussex payroll yesterday and took up a position in the Sky commnetary box today, so I'd guess the delay in the announcement of his long-anticipated retirement was while Luke Sutton was negotiating the finer points of his contract with Rupert Murdoch...

Yes, I reckon the club has been screwed on this one.

I'd be surprised if we've been screwed, there must be provisions in the central contracts that if a player gets injured before losing their central contract that protects the county as much as possible. Was Matt's commentary a one off? What he said was pretty good, but it annoys me when players go straight into the commentary box without proper training.
